Wood Porn: Fox A grade 16g.

9 Attachment(s)
Here are some photos of a Fox A grade I just finished custom stocking. 16g.
My customer supplied me with the absolutely outstanding blank which came from Cecil. If the stock looks long, thats because it is. 16" LOP and left hand cast. This is the second Fox I have stocked for this customer since he was fitted.

This is a perfect example of a blank that has perfect grain flow in the wrist and then goes just crazy in the butt.

All metal surfaces refinished as well. Rust and Nitre Bluing by myself and case colors by Malcolm Clark.

That's a nice stick of wood. I have gotten several blanks from Cecil and all have been exceptional. When I re stocked the Fox XE that blank came from him also.

Nice work Brian, both you and your client should be proud.

Brian, that is beautiful work. I am curious if your customer is Taller than 6'- 6"? I like my legnth of pull at 14 3/4" and I am 6'-3". I know there are a lot of other variables to what the proper LOP is for each individual but that is a very long LOP.

Beautiful work as always Brian! That is is sharp to say the least!

Outstanding!

Nice wood but not the shape IMO.

john pulis 01-21-2016 07:17 AM

Absolutley beautiful all the way around

Eric Eis 01-21-2016 07:18 AM

That is one beautiful piece of wood, and your workmanship matches the blank. Great checkering, Brian what kind of finish did you use on that stock, it really pulls the color and grain out without being to shiny.

Brian Dudley 01-21-2016 08:08 AM

The finish on this one is Timberluxe.

Keep in mind with this gun that i had some very exacting perameters to stick to in regards to stock dimensions, and some unusual ones at that. And it can be difficult to do so at times and still try to maintain lines that are correct looking for the make of gun.

Rich Anderson 01-21-2016 08:26 AM

It's a custom stock so whatever the client wants as to the contour is up to him. Nothing says it has to look "original".

I don't know how much height has to do with LOP. I'm close to 6ft and I like a15" LOP

Chuck Bishop 01-21-2016 08:48 AM

Brian, can you detail the process you used to apply the finish? I assume Timberlake is a modified oil. How does it compare to Pro Custom Oil and Truoil? Is the final coat like that or did you knock it down?

Brian Dudley 01-21-2016 08:53 AM

As far as details about the composition of Timberluxe, i am sure there are details on their we site. When i do a finish using just Timberluxe, i wet sand it into the wood for the first two or three costs and then hand apply it in the coats after that. I do knock down with steel wool every couple of coats as needed. The finish coats are left as they dry and the sheen you see is just that. The only thing i can note about Timberluxe is that is takes a long time for the finish to really get hard. It has a bit of a "green" feel for some time after applying it.
I will a lot of times also use Timberluxe as a final top coat over my shellac finishes to get the sheen i am looking to acheive.

It does get more into the wood and provide a darker and richer finish than Tru Oil. And though i do have a bottle of Pro Custom here, i have not used it enough to formulate an opinion about it.

Wonderful piece of wood, but I can't say I like the wrist, shape of the ball grip, or nose of the comb. To each his own I suppose.

Tom Wyraz 01-25-2016 06:37 AM

yoweee what a piece of wood!!

Brian,
Good morning.
Would you be willing to share the DOC and DAH?
Thanks,
Bill J

Looks perfect Brian. I can't wait to shoot it. I was fitted by Pat Laboone out of Duluth,MN. I have shot the first gun Brian stocked for me the past year and have been extremely happy with my results. This will be my grouse gun. 28" 4 wt barrels. For those that are wondering I am 6'2". After the stock fitting and shooting lessons I don't even notice the LOP.

For those looking for a restock work Brian has been fantastic. Always communicates progress reports even though I probably bug him more than I should!!! I am hoping I can find the funds to send him a third gun!!!

Stocks can always be refinished if need be!! 😄 God willing I will hunt this gun for the next 40 years!!

Larry Stauch 05-15-2016 09:45 AM

I'm just impressed with the work Brian does, especially for being a relatively young man.
We'll all be able to say "I knew Brian when" as his craft develops over the next years.

Outstanding Brian!

Gary Carmichael Sr 05-21-2016 08:30 AM

Brian, beautiful work! Good that you can find a craftsman to do that kind of work, and work with the customer to his requirements, great wood too! Gary
