Did you know that your hammer guns are actually Wooden Tennis Raquets??
My son Henry (who some of you know) was trying out for the Shotgun Team at Clemson in South Carolina last week.
Tryouts are for the next 2 weeks as well. They shoot trap, skeet and 5 stand. When he was interviewed, the coach asked him when was the last time he shot skeet and he said two weeks ago. What did you score? 24 What were you shooting? My 28 gauge H&R hammergun. To which the coach responded: You can't shoot that - that's like a wooden tennis racquet. Henry was quietly incensed. But Henry is an engineering student who thinks it's a good idea to make vintage Volvo 240 red-blocks develop 300+ horsepower with modern turbochargers. Henry shot a 23 in his first qualifying round with his 28 H&R hammergun. The coach has told him he must shoot AT LEAST a 20 gauge in competition. I told him he has to be a good boy- at first. |
Its nice to hear a school has a shotgun team these days. The coach needs some enlightenment however. Bigger isn't always better. When I shot registered skeet the 28ga was my best gauge. I shot the 12ga and doubles with a 20.
|
I shot trap in college and at the college midwest regionals with my old Mod1912 Win made in 1916. I had foam rubber padding duct taped on the stock. The others were all shooting modern semi autos and Browning Superposed bought by dad or the university. Some I beat, others beat me.
If he must shoot a 20ga, I'm sure you can find him a suitable 20ga Parker opened to skeet chokes. |
George, you win 1st place for compelling thread titles!
|
Do they shoot american or international skeet?I would think someone could loan him a 20 ga. damascus hammer gun that would be suitable to the coaches needs
|
That coach would probably crap himself if he saw damascus barrels. BTW, I play tennis on a couple of travel tennis teams (an over 55, and open league), and for giggles sometimes we play with wooden raquets.

My Grandson has a shooting scholarship to Hillsdale College in MI. He shoots all the games, including trap, with his Blaser F3. If I gave him a SxS, he would try to tilt it 90 degreees

I think I will send him down my short barreled Grade 2 12 gauge for skeet. It has nice Damascus bbls. The other kids will probably run for cover when he shoots it. |
Big D: Good on said grandson for going to Hillsdale!! For his shotgun choice issues, I'd recommend shock therapy.
|
Richard - I can't take credit for the gun choice. That decision was his Dad's. I wonder about the financial strategy that has Dad paying for him and the two boys to have shot something over 60,000 registered targets over the past 3-4 years. Probably could have paid for Harvard. On the other hand, at least he's going to a right-thinking school.
For any of you who haven't seen it, sign up for "Imprimus", Hillsdale's thought-provoking brochure which come out on a regular basis |
Big D Hillsdale, great choice! gary

28 gauge at skeet was the first gauge I made AAA . I shot the 20 gauge in the 12 gauge and doubles events as well the last few years ! I might add the 28 gauge was the gauge I broke my first 100 straight . |
Maybe you should get him a nice 10 gauge; coach might like that.
|
or how about one of those "obsolete" 16 gauges , bet he has never seen a purple shell.

Do it right. Have Charlie send the old wrecked 8 gauge with a few black powder loads.

Harold, I hear ya on the wooden racquets! I've just started playing in a Woooden Bat Baseball league. Been playing softball for 20 years, but it's nice to feel a solid hit with a wooden bat. The older I get it seems the more I like the older way of doing things.

Mr P,
Good for your son. You encourage him to continue kicking their butts with any gun he wishes to shoot. Just shows the dumb mentality of people (meaning his "coach"). All my best to you both, John |

George, I'll let him use my 16 ga. bobbed lifter woodcock gun if he'd really like to freak out the coach.
. |
Dean, what a cool trigger guard!
|
Thanks Calvin. I asked Geoffroy Gournet to engrave his trademark woodcock on it.
. |
Good luck to him making the shooting team. They will be lucky to have him. But his choice of school Clemson really!
|
Miss. State has a shooting sports team. They shoot trap and skeet against other schools. They use and are very welcomed at the Starkville Gun Club. They coached by a couple of members and wonder what these old men are doing out there with old side by sides with Damascus barrels.
|
They should ask those old men why they enjoy shooting old doubles with Damascus barrels... but they should prepare to be enlightened by 'old men'.

Henry made the team Friday. The coach won't let him shoot smaller than 12 gauge and told him that a student complained about him shooting a SXS. I told him to shoot whatever the coach wants him to shoot. Numbers talk BS walks.
He is excited that he gets free ammo and free birds. |
Dean The kids on the shooting team seem to be a really good group and have asked about the Damascus barrels and side by sides. The word fun along With " it works now just like it did 100 years ago " were used.
|
That's great Daniel!
