Uncle Bill's VH 16 Gauge Ready At Last

2 Attachment(s)
Last fall my cousin gave me two of her fathers Parkers. One is a VH 20 which was ready to go with the exception of a chip in the toe of the stock and the other a VH 16 that was missing most of the screws, the cocking lever and the trigger guard bow. Plus she gave me a set of DH 12 gauge barrels for a #2 frame. I've been shooting the 20 and want to make sure the rest of the 12 is not in my cousins house before I have the barrels fitted to the #2 framed VH whose original barrels are the property of PGCA via Sherman Bell.
I sent the 16 gauge to DelGrego to replace the parts and screws as well as to regulate the Miller single trigger. Per the "Book" this gun had a pistol grip stock, but as it did not have the original triggers I had a straight trigger guard bow made. It just returned from Show-Me Gunstocks. Donnie picked up another fine piece of scrap wood from the floor and did a wonderful job.....

Harry,Very nice work! What type of butt treatment? Checkered?

Harry Collins 05-08-2010 09:10 AM

Dave,

Yes, a checkred butt with the following dimentions: 14 1/4" LOP, 2 1/2 DAH, no cast and 3" of pitch. It comes up like a dream. My horrid attorney friend and sporting clays partner is in Peru attending a wedding so I'll just shoot a little skeet with Uncle Bill's 16 gauge this afternoon.

Very nice Harry. You'll like it in the Dove fields I'm sure.

Harry Collins 05-08-2010 12:32 PM

Rich,

I'll save it for late season dove and quail. I'm not sure how it is choked. Guess I'll go shoot the creek. That will give me a good indication. I would shoot the side of one of the barns, but there is no more room.

May I suggest a patterning board? :p Turtles, frogs and small fish may be harmed in using the creek:rolleyes:

Harry Collins 05-11-2010 09:07 PM

Was able to slip away this afternoon and shoot. At about 35 yards the left barrel was a little tighter than the right. From what patterns I have witnessed upon the water I would say these barrels are tight. You dont have to keep score if you don't miss. I did miss, but out of 100 the misses were less than 10. I think I may have a few other broken stocked Parkers restocked.

Someone mind telling me why I can't find that kind of scrap lumber.....:banghead:

Rich Anderson 05-12-2010 08:08 PM

Harry-I currently am in undying anticipation of getting a CHE 20 back from the stockmaker. This will be the third Parker I have that been restocked and I have had one bent to fit. it does make all the difference in the world when the gun fits:)

Harry Collins 05-12-2010 08:36 PM

Rich,

I was just guessing on this one, but it works. I was fitted in England in 1974 and that was over 50 pounds ago. I put a leather recoil pad on it today and threw it to the shoulder. Guess I could have stood an additional 1/2" of stock. I will try it with the pad next time I shoot it, though the next stock will be the same as this. When winter comes and the coats go on 14 1/4" will be perfect.

Do you have a phone no. for Donnie...Would like to talk about doing up a Fox 16 ga. I like a 6lb or under 16 and the Fox guns are the lightest availible and of excl. quality. Just can't find one with a hi stock like my parkers and Parker repro's...all the original Fox are 2 7/8 or about drop! CSM Fox would be great except for the price tag!, even used they are over 10K. I will watch for a nice light ejector 16 with tight chokes and defective wood. Thanks all Kenny Graft SXS ohio...(-: Been watching for a Parker 16 at 6lbs...no luck as yet! Them nice O frame 16-s are scarce items too!

If you ever make it up to MI I know where a very similar 16 ga VH resides:

Jay,You need to put that picture up for "The Parker of the Month"..:)

Harry Collins 09-13-2010 04:39 PM

Mike,

I have been trying to get away, but the boss has been out all summer and I've had to hold the fort. First week day I have off I'll call and we can meet to make noise and break something.

Harry

Mike Franzen 09-13-2010 06:28 PM

Next Tuesday would work for me.

Harry Collins 09-14-2010 06:42 AM

Jay,

That is one beautiful Parker. I took my 16 dove hunting Saturday, but no birds. I took one dove and threw it into a pile for a Doctor we were hunting with.

Mike,

I will see the owner this morning and ask him when my job will become "part time" again.

Harry
