An early Fox C grade 12g.
9 Attachment(s)
I just finished up this 1911 vintage C grade Fox for a gentleman. It is a 12g. with 30" barrels. It started with the owner just wanting me to make a new Beavertail forend since the feel of one was what he preferred for shooting. However, the gun also had very little finish remaining on the buttstock, a poorly fitted Hawkins recoil pad and some pretty messed up screws. So he agreed to correct all of those things also.
Since there is not really many examples of Beavertail forends on early Fox guns, I asked the customer to provide me with a photo of a forend that suited the look he would have wanted. And I decided to echo the full cover checkering used on the original splinter onto the BTFE. A lot of checkering! The buttstock is an absolutely awesome piece of walnut and it cleaned up very nicely. The new forend was made out of similar wood. And I also refinished the original Splinter forend to match. Since there was no alteration to any of the forend metal or screws, the splinter can be easily put back on the gun at any time if desired. I made up and fitted Two new action screws and they were engraved by Gournet. A new Orange Silvers pad finishes it all off. Brian, not an ugly gun. You can work on my next Fox.

I have seen this gun in person. The pictures are nice but the gun looks awesome in hand. Brian has the wood finish down to as close to original as I have ever seen. The checkering is flawless on the forend. The owner will be very happy.

Nice job Brian. I have an early A and a BE with the same stunning wood. You did it right.

Beautiful job Brian . Just my personal taste , but I don't like the blackening of the checkering , especially on a Fox gun. Just seems to hide the beauty of a lot of wood .

Wowwwww. That's A Whole Lot o' Checkering Going On!! Beautiful work, Brian. Tell me, have your eyes crisscrossed back to normal yet?
PS---You must admit, ol' Ansley sure knew how to buy lumber!! |
Very nice Brian!! I too want to know if your eyes recuperated yet?

Just imagine the folks 100 years ago, doing piece-rate checkering all day long with poor lighting. Sort of like the Amish women quilting without electric lights today

Brian your work gets better all the time. I too have a very early C grade 1911 with great wood 30" tubes and all original finish. Would not touch anything today but it sure knocks down high passing white wing doves in Texas.

Very,very nice.

Knockout piece of wood. I, too, am a little turned off by the darkened checkering. It just isn't in keeping with the original offering, but you did a terrific job on the checking. Reminds me of a a guy who used to do all the hand painted lettering on the transom of the boats at the yard I worked at when I was a kid. When he looked at you, his eyeballs were going in two different directions, yet he was the 'go-to' guy for the best lettering out there.
I've seem you shoot, Brian, so your eyeballs are still working ok. |
