Boykin Breeders in Virginia
 

Any you guys know of good Boykin Spaniel breeders in Virginia ?

I would prefer people you can honestly say you've dealt with and not by the word of a friend of a friend type thing .

You can always go for a field bred english cocker, Ones imported from England are damn good bird dogs, I'd avoid US lines. If your interested let me know ano I'll forward you the info.

Boykins go well with Parkers. I will take both on a dove hunt in an hour. Check the web for the Mid-Atlantic Boykin Spaniel Club or the Boykin Spaniel Society 803-425-1032 and ask about litters. I drove from Mississippi to South Carolina for dog I have now. There nothing like LBD ( little brown dog ) Best of luck Dan

I've had three Boykins. I'm with you, there is no substitute. English cocker's might be good, but they are still cocker's. A lot like mules to train. If they don't get it they won't do it. Wish I knew who had good working Boykins as I would love to have another from good retrieving stock.

Don't hate on what you don't understand, that's why you buy from England directly, the best bloodlines not watered down by weak breeding here.

Hey will retrieve all day long, fur & feather, retrieve a wounded goose from a frozen river and run fur all day long. Did I mention he has more heart and courage then any other dog I've owned or met?

Craig my Boykin came out of South Carolina, may be some good Virginia breeders but why limit yourself to one state. I would go to some of the Boykin clubs events and look at as many as possible

That's all good and fine for you . If I wanted something to shoot quail or grouse over I'd get an English Setter that was bred in this country . But I'm looking for a Boykin to use for retrieval purposes pretty much only . When I was a good bit younger " I thought" everything from the UK was the thing to have be it cars guns etc etc . Now I don't come close to feeling that way . I asked a specific question for a specific breed and while there may or may not be anything wrong with the breed you mentioned it's not what interests me at the moment .

You know if I go through with getting one of these little guys I just might give some thought to fall turkey hunting again !

Mid Atlantic Boykin Club has a trial Oct 10th, I think it's going to be Ayden NC you ought to go and look at dogs. Can let you know the details in a few days.

if you go to gundogbreeders.com you search breeders by state and breed, it's a very good resource. It should help you track down what your looking for. Being relatively close to SC you could probably find a reputable breeder that could arrange pup logistics to you as well.

Ahhhh I got a hard on in my 20's to get an XKE convertible !

Craig Just talked to Frank Williams of Marion S.C. (843-423-2362) He is the man I got Bay my 2nd Boykin from. We talk every 2 or 3 weeks just see how the dogs are doing. He said that he has a 4 month puppy ( male) that he would sale. This Puppy is a repeat breeding from the litter Bay is from and they have turned out super ! One of Bays litter mates placed in the top ten out 76 dogs in the novice class at the Boykin Nationals. The dog had to run novice because he was one week too old for Puppy class ! Bay had retrieved around 50 doves and had flushed and retrieved prairie chickens ,sharptails and wild pheasants in South Dakota at 9 months. She has also has flushed released quail and picked them up. Her best volume day was at Prairie Wildlife when she picked up 25 pheasants at a tower shoot. We will go to a dove shoot this afternoon and leave next week for Vermont with 3 Parkers to learn about Ruffed grouse and woodcock. then home for a few days before back to S.D. for prairie chickens sharptails then on to Wisc. for more grouse. Boykins are like Parkers the good ones are not cheap. If I wanted a Boykin I would talk to Frank. Dan

A gentleman from here in VA and also a Parker forum person called me Thursday and we talked for about an hour . He gave me contact info for several breeders he knew in our general area . And he is a Boykin man as well . As to pup costs I am well aware being to tight on price can and usually will bite you in the a..s..s ! The last Border Terrier pup I bought was a touch north of $1500 . So the Boykin prices don't deter me . My biggest issue for a new pup has to do with me leaving the country for a month at a time and with my father . When I leave I have to have someone stay at nights with him and our "Little Evil Border Terrier" and I'm not sure I wanna leave a relatively new pup alone in that situation for a month very shortly after I got her . Oh yeah I didn't mention I generally prefer female dogs 😉

My father is also a trip killer for me if I cannot go and return pretty much the same day . Hence part of the reason I haven't done the Southern if I'm in the country ��

I'm from Minnesota and I've been interested in a Boykin Spaniel and I'm wondering if anybody know of any breeders up hear in the Midwest.

I think if you go to the AKC website, and look for Boykin Clubs, that should turn up local clubs. I don't know about Boykins, but I did spend a bunch of time with field bred Springers, and I would caution you to make sure you end up with field-oriented breeders, not show dogs

This may be a bit of a long shot, but a fellow named Sherwood Londree (sp??) of Scottsville, Va. may be, or know who might be ,what you seek.
My experience and exposure to him was as board member of NWTF, Va, State Chapter.
He did fantastic job with training them (primarily for turkey) return guarantee if not satisfied, which makes me think he could be an option.
If not, I tried and am sorry.
You'll have to research for reaching him on your own.

I have been in that area 20-25 years ago to visit a man named "Elmo Londree" to look at English Setters and Brittanys . It would stand to reason that this fellow of whom you speak may very well be his son .

Elmo had the Bandee line of Brittanies back then and my grouse hunting buddy was hung up on them for some reason .

Interesting chain of events. Small world in terms of "connections" amongst the hunting and shooting community.

My Boykin was 2 Monday and goes to the vet. Thursday to have her hips x-rayed for OFA certification. She hunted sharptails, prairie chickens, and pheasants in South Dakota at 9 months. This fall after dove season we were invited by a fellow PGCA member to join him in Vermont for woodcock and ruffed grouse. Later we met in South Dakota for prairie grouse then on to Wisconsin for more grouse.( retirement is fun ) I live 7 miles from Prairie Wildlife an Orvis endorsed shooting preserve. I enjoy shooting, but sometimes I just pick up for the tower shoots. Bay my Boykin picked up over 100 birds in 2 shoots last weekend and we go again this weekend. That is priceless training ! During her 2nd. year she has over 300 birds retrieved about 75 of them flushed. I love my Boykin but there are some duds out there. There are no brilliant breed of dogs only brilliant dogs within that breed.

I agree that retirement (semi in my case) is like a "new leash" on life...pun intended.
In my case turkeys remain the primary passion with quail a distant second .

I think it is a wonderful gift that folks like us are blessed with health sufficient to allow hunting well past retirement age.

Hopefully that won't end any time soon!!

Sterling Love all bird shooting. Killed my first turkey in 1972 since then I seen the sun rise in the woods on many a spring morning. none of them wasted.
