What do you guys use in 410?
Thinking about picking up a model 42, I quail hunt a ton and thought it'd be a fun challenge, what do you guys use and what other American guns should I look for?

Well, for starters, how about a nice little Parker .410? |
or wait for Thomas to post one for sale- maybe a nice little hammer gun

Parker .410, $26,000. Model 42, $1,500. It's your choice. I shoot both and don't see a bunch of difference in the "Fun" factor. They are both a hoot when we are shooting them.

Michael,
My go to dove and quail gun all my life has been the .410, unless conditions call for more gun. I shot a Citori superlight for some time, then a grade V Browning model 42 for a couple of years...but just cannot stand leaving empties on the ground. The last 9 years I have primarily used a Mark DeHaan, custom made HUGLU, sideplated boxlock, miniature frame, with exhibition grade wood, english stock and SSBP, 27" barrels and chokes Mod/Mod...Have put easily 100 flats through the gun...and have not yet had to put a screw back in time. I will post some pics of the gun tomorrow...I spent about $4,000 on the gun new nine years ago,and have had several friends order them since..... |
I've got an Iver Johnson Skeeter 410 I've been shooting for about 40 years now . Also have a Crescent Arms 410 that I picked up a couple years back . As well as some Austrian Prussian over and under 410 that's also been here a good 25 years . The 410 I shot the best was my old K-32 with Kolar AAA 410 tubes .

I'd like to know where Bill can get a M42 for $1500 esp if it's a solid rib or even a Simmons vent rib. The 42 is a great and fun gun. I let a solid rib skeet go years ago and it's one I still regret selling.
Currently a CSM Fox FE in 410 goes to Georgia with me for Quail. |

You couldn't buy my M42 for $8K. I bought it 15 years ago as an unfired factory vent ribbed 28" gun choked "skeet". Would be one of the last guns I would sell, along with a High Standard Olympic .22 Short
|
I shoot a Charles Hellis. 2 1/2" with ejectors 26" barrels over the last 15 years. Love it. just the older I get, the more I like 28 ga

I posted a Lefever 410 on the for sale forum and it is still available. I hope you give it a look. Thomas

I just saw your not a member so you can't buy on our for sale forum. Thomas

I shoot my 410 SXS Francotte's, and shoot #9's for dove and pen raised birds. Mainly because I ended up with about two flats of 9's. I prefer to shoot 6's and 7 1/2's on wild quail. Can be fun to shoot the 410, but my go to guns generally are 20 gauges.

This year, just for the heck of it and because I am not sure how much longer I can walk my farm hills, I am going to try for partridge with my .410 Taurus Judge. A pretty good pattern at 10 yards will do the job if I do my job.

A friend of mine purchased a 42 skeet with fancy wood and an aftermarket rib at a local gun auction for $1200. He made quite a buy as it is in pristine condition but is choked and marked skeet. They must have tightened up skeet chokes as he uses it for 5-stand where targets are often further than the 21 yard skeet target and it smashes targets with authority. l've shot it some and have to admit it is a bunch of fun to play around with.

My first .410-bore was a Winchester Model 42 Skeet Gun two barrel and magazine set that jumped out of a pawn shop in Denver in 1970 and begged me to take it home. One barrel and magazine 26-inch SKEET and the other 26-inch with a Cutts. While stationed in San Diego the Cutts barrel got swapped out for a 28-inch modified barrel a local gunsmith had. In the early 1970s I shot Doves, Quail and quite a few Rabbits with it, but mostly skeet targets. I haven't fired a .410-bore shot at game since 1973, but shoot a lot of .410 at clay targets. Also own a Winchester 23 Classic, a Crescent Fire Arms Co. New Empire, a Field Grade Ithaca NID, a Browning Superposed .410-bore New Model Skeet Gun, .410-bore tubes for my Remington Model 3200 Skeet Gun, and my latest toy an RBL-410 --

I just looked on Tony's website and it appears that he truly does not have any .410 RBLs to sell. Dave had the gumption to order one at the inflated price and now he has a great gun. I would love to have one, but I missed the boat.

I'd love to have a high-grade Parker .410 or perhaps a CSMC Fox DE Special in .410, but that ain't gonna happen unless I were to win the Powerball and more importantly--get it past the Mrs.! Until the impossible happens, either one of my 28-ga. Parker Reproductions with a set of 28-.410 Chambermates will have to do:
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps34115919.jpg Or---another .410 I picked up late last fall is a Dickinson (not made in America, but sold by an American company) that I'm having a ball shooting targets with and will be carried a bit this fall for Grouse and Woodcock. One could actually make an argument as this being a contender for best value in a gun for the money. Where else can you buy a brand new scaled-frame .410 with a trigger plate action, platform lump barrels, chrome lined bores, Southgate ejectors, bone-charcoal casehardening, engraved, hand checkered, non-automatic safety, Turkish Walnut, etc. for just $1300? http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps1ba71d1c.jpg |
A good o/u 410 is a Rizzini, I have LL BEAN edition and of course 3 Win 42's which is the best 410 for the money if you don't mind a pump, I have also owned a superposed and a citori both very good, but I sure would like a VHE.
|
For decades I had lusted for a Parker VHE 410 skeet gun. When one would come up for sale it was out of my reach financially then a friend had a Fox FE by CSM that was near new and half the price point of the Parker. I managed to get the Fox and couldn't be happier with it.

I have a second year production mod. 42 28" modified choke which I shoot a few times through the summer and use on squirrels. Love the gun. Also have the browning with full chokes. A fine gun to own and shoot. Put a fair amount of SC and skeet rounds through a Ceasar Garrini Tempio 410 which is a solid gun and fits me well. In all I tend to shoot WIN AAs or AA reloads with 296 powder.
PS - BIG D - just took 6 hi standards to the auction as I accumulated a few over the years but kept all the ones I couldn't part with. Like you the last to go would be the 1950 Olympic 22 short. Also won't part with the Hi Standard K411 pump in skeet chokes .410 |
Gman Is the 1950 gun a slant grip, or military grip? Mike's a military 106.
|
I have many 42's and and have never shot one as well as a cutt's compensator gun I sold years ago. The balance and the visualization of the cutt's as a larger barrel made breaking clay targets easy. Yes they are ugly but a solid rib With an add on cutt's will run you $1100-$1300 many times with nice wood.
|
I've always liked the look of a Cutt's. Some guns could be ordered new with a Cutt's.

Interesting thing about the good ol Cutts. I have two .410's and a 28 Remington 11-48's with what i was told were factory cutts. The interesting thing about the .410's is that the compensator tube is backwards, directing gasses forward to create more recoil in order to cycle the spring action with 2 1/2 " target ammo.
|
Tx- If it's factory cutts there shouldn't be a choke marking on the chamber

Typically all factory Cutt's guns did not have the choke stamped on the barrel. I have seen this on model 12's, 42's and Remington 31's. If you have a model 12 or 42 they are quite desirable in that configuration.
|
I have a M12 , two barrel, solid rib, 30" full and 26" with a Cutts. All serial numbers match and it is a blast to shoot the 26" barrels with the Cutts. There's just something about how the M12 points and handles.
|
:)Got that right Daryl.

Okay, interesting....i bought all three 11-48's 25 years ago from an estate sale, that is why i was given SOME word of mouth provenance. The 28 bore is marked MOD, so definitely not factory. Both .410's are within three serial numbers, and both are marked CYL. I have seldom seen .410's in cylinder bore, and most commonly either full or skeet. My supposition is this fellow ordered the two guns intending to put cutts on immediately. Without having to sacrifice barrel length cutting the choke out. Both barrels are 26" before the cutts, almost 30 with. All three guns were cut to 13" LOP, including being fitted with Pach white lines. Will have to delve deeper..

I use a model 42 for rabbits when I'm not using a Parker. I have a pair of Bailey full length 410 tubes I got with a 20 ga Parker from Jim DiSpagno. I haven't tried them yet. Anyone had experience with these?
|
I just added a circa 1970 Browning Superposed 410 26 1/2" SK&SK . We shall see how this one feels in my hands . I might add I also picked up a circa 1970 Browning Superposed 28 gauge 28" SK&SK .
Both about 3-6 hours ago ! |
My .410 is a DeHaan SGrS. After buying a nice Parker reproduction 20 gauge, I gave the .410 to my youngest daughter.

I had a 20 gauge Superlight in my hands a couple years ago , it was a good solid gun but it would have needed a stock refinish for me to be satisfied with it . So I sold it to someone else for more then I would have paid ! I have six Superposed now (well provided I'm satisfied with these two when they arrive) . I think I still need a nice 32" Broadway and one of the old early 12 gauge field guns with factory double triggers . I've had a pair of the old double trigger 12's in my hands before and like a lot of other things , they sold for more then I was willing to pay . The 28 gauge from the GB pics . http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ps2qa08kok.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...psp4kyr8cg.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...psagaouzzj.jpg And GB pics of the 410 ! http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ps4nxqee4f.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...psahbqsykd.jpg With the addition of these two I have a 12 gauge 26 1/2" skeet circa 1968 , a 20 gauge 26 1/2" skeet circa 1965 , the 28 gauge 28" skeet circa 1970 and the circa 1970 410 skeet 26 1/2" . |
