got up at 4.00 am looked outside stars a shineing little cool so put on a little more clothes...got into the woods a little early but thats all rite better than being late...had my decoys out and setting in the blind before daylight..i blew my locater call at daybreak but not a gobbler was heard i hunted this spot till 11.00 and pulled up stakes went home and eat a bite the rested up till 1.00 pm then went back to a large soybean field...got all my hunting gear together and got to the edge of the field there was 5 turkeys feeding now i was in a bind4 to 5 hundred yards to them turkeys and not a bush to hide behind...i backed up and trying to decide what to do..i started to just go somewhere else and come back in the morning and be there before daylight..then decided i would try a differant plan....there was a large drainage ditch that circled this field so i decided to stay out of site behind some large pine trees and the ditchthis was not a good plan in about 5 minutes of walking the briars got rough and were the skidders had dragged the pines they had cut and dragged was a mess all growed up and them skidders had left places were they had got stuck them holes were waist deep.luckily i did not fall in one.. finally i got two were i could cross this ditch and get into the field but i still had them turkeys to worry about...i eased over to look thru the brush was i lucky them turkey were feeding and leaving the field this took about 30minutes for them to leave the field..i knew two of those turkeys were large gobblers did not know about the other 3....i went accross that field fast as i could but every step i would bog down half way to my knees s finallyout of the muddy field ...i new this area well so i knew were to set up at..i got every thing sqared away got out the call gave 2 yelps and i had 2 gobblers answer me both within 200 yards or less one gobbler only answered me once but this other gobbler was ready..i gave him my best calls it took him 30 minutes for him to come to the dummy hens..meanwhile this gobbler to my back side was trying and wanting to cross a creek i was setting on but the gobbler to my left beat him there...the gobbler came to my left and i was sitting just right no left hand shot today..i let the bird come to within 25 steps but i actully thought he was a little further out any way i used the left barrel that had a load of 2 ounces of no 2 lead shot....put it on his head and the rest is history...the turkey weighed 19 1/4 lbs and had 9 inch beard and 7/8 spurs that were razor sharp...took this bird with the heavy field ithaca i got from russ jackson...was gona take the lite 8 ga but it was just to far to have to carry the 8 so the ithaca was the gun chosen..i got that bird at 3.15 time i got home and took some pictures and showed it to my dad and got him dressed and cleaned it it was 6.30 i m going back after that other gobbler in the morning.....charlie

Congratulations on a very successful season Charlie. So far this year I have seen five hens one deer and a land turtle. I did almost hit a big tom with the truck. Not to bad for my first year. Now if I could just learn to call one of the dam toms in.

Charlie, great hunt , I'm done for now until the fall season gets here.

I did manage my second bird , shot him with my crossbow and my buddy Steve shot the other two with his 870 20 gauge

Actually it's quite easy, you just have to learn to make a sound like and ear of corn. They'll come a running.:whistle:

you boys done good..and with a crossbow...that would put a feather in my hat for sure if i got one with a cross bow for sure...charlie

got up at 4.00 again was at my blind by 5.15 it was cold here this morning i had a mile walk and stayed warm till i sat in the blind then got chilly again...seen 10 canadian geese 2 black ducks and heard some pigs but never seen them..i stayed till 12.00 was cold and hungary so came home...think i ll just stay by the heater this evening...charlie

was up at 4 again this morning boy i had to really push myself to git up this morning...what a fellow has to go thru when turkey hunting...it was bad chili this morning had to put on extra clothes to stay warm... the turkeys must have been froze up also never heard the first peep out of one...well tommorrow is the last day yep same old shedule 4 am sharp....gona be another cold one i m afraid....charlie

well i did wake up at 4 am but i was sick and acking all over so my final day of turkey hunting was in my dreams in the recliner...but i had a good seasons hunt hopefully will be around and able to go again next year...i m better now..just got thru looking at a 1000 differant old cars....charlie

Sorry you missed the last day. You're my kind of turkey hunter so you must have really been sick. I got my second bird last Tuesday, a whopper at 21 pounds and long spurs. But killed him with the cannon again. I had to play tricks on this old bird. I don't know how many people do it but I gave him two calls at the same time, calling over my shoulder with the mouth call to sound far away and then using the pot and striker for softer calls that sounded closer to him. About thirty minutes and here came the big blue head through the woods.

But turkey hunting gives all kinds of highs and lows. That made two birds in the last four days I had hunted. Man was my head swolen. Thought I should have my own TV show! Went out Thursday and got in the woods late (as usual). Turkey was gobbling up a storm. Sneaked to about 100 yards and called and he sounded like he was on the way. Barely got all my junk situated (mask, game ears, seat, decoy, gloves, two calls, shooting stick to hold the gun up in case he hangs up) and looked and here he came. At thirty yards now he was looking at the decoy and not me. I was one second from being finished with my season and able to get some sleep (and have the boss stop nagging). One second away from three birds in the last five hunting days. Pulled the trigger and over he went and then he got airborne. Gave him a parting shot, probably two feet off.

Forgot to aim. Been back after him twice, Friday in torrential rain and he strutted at 100 yards away for five minutes. He's well educated now. Could have taken the short short 10 Parker lifter and had an easy shot as he was still coming to me when I missed. I went from a high as he was in the bag to an all time hunting low in one second.

Some times you kill birds you shouldn't, and sometimes you miss them when the worst shot in the world could kill them.

That is how it goes

Can't talk either one of my sons into going, so I might miss today.

Will probably use that as a pass to go out after work and Mother's Day Weekend.

jerry thats a nice bird for sure...3 years ago i had a good season like you could do nothing wrong so i thought..i missed a big bird at 30 steps or less all i know is that i missed..ha my hunting is over till sometimes in june were having a 2 week squirl hunting season dont think i ll go though it is for serios hunters with young pups to train..boy its gona be hard to see one of them squirls with the leaves on...limit is 4 a day...bet not many people will get the limit....charlie
