Grade 1 checkering on G grade

How odd is having grade 1 checkering pattern on a G grade? It has the 2 points on the forends also. The book says it has ejectors and it doesn,t.
Am sure it has not been restocked.

Bill Murphy 03-15-2010 08:46 AM

A PGCA letter often mentions a restock. Often also is the restock being done at the lowest possible grade to save money. However, it is not unknown for a gun to have a different grade of wood or checkering at build time. My unengraved CH Grade gun has factory D Grade wood and a credit issued for the deletions.

Gordon,
I also have a VH 20 gage that came to me with GH checkering. The forend iron has typical VH engraving and is numbered to the gun so I just assumed the forend wood was broken and replaced sometime in the past.

Bill, you and I examined a B grade 5 gun a few years ago at the Southern as I recall, in Stephen Cobb's rack of "NFS" guns that had no engraving at all (I don't remember if it had the V style of border roll and I don't recall what style of checkering either). I wonder whatever would posess someone to order a gun like this?... in my opinion it is nothing more than a V grade 1 as the internals are said to be the same between the grades except for the polishing of internal parts in the higher grades. It is, however, collectable in that it is unusual by the mere fact of the grade stamps.

I have a very nice forend from a VH with engraving common to a C grade 4 and above. The gun is in the book as a VH and has V grade checkering.

Bill Murphy 03-15-2010 11:55 AM

Dean, my CH was specifically ordered "no engraving" and does not have any screw or border work, even on the buttplate. All other perks of the C Grade were in place, including English Walnut, Acme Steel, skeleton butt, but only D Grade checkering and drop points. There is no provenance available on the other gun you mention.

How come my VH doesn't look like that?

Bill Murphy 03-16-2010 10:04 AM

Wow, I want that forend.

Just pull the forend iron and look for the serial no. stamped into the wood under the iron at the knuckle.

Larry Frey 03-17-2010 12:30 PM

Jim I should probably take a look but I was never really that concerned with how or why it got this way. I bought the gun for a very reasonable price and I can guarantee you this fall when my grandson learns to shoot two triggers he will not care at all about the forend checkering.
