The Gun From Hell

6 Attachment(s)
After Chris Dawe did a wonderful job restocking this gun, I had it back here this fall just long enough to shoot it at the Vintagers. Then it was off to Brad Bachelder for his magic.
It arrived back here last Monday, and since it was so cold this week, I spent the last three days in the basement workshop making it a new case. It's pretty much the same as the case I made for my other Grade two 16, just a tinch longer to hold the 30" barrels. As much as I liked the olive colored worsted wool I've used in the past, it wasn't available, so I chose a traditional maroon.

Dean Romig 01-17-2015 03:47 PM

Kudos to your and Brad's talents.

And Chris too. I have not seen anyone doing that kind of sidelock inletting on this side of the Atlantic.

WmRike 01-17-2015 04:19 PM

That's gorgeous! What'd I miss? Where is the hell part?

chris dawe 01-17-2015 04:41 PM

I'm uncomfortably flattered, that's very kind of you to say Edgar ,Thank you.

Dean Romig 01-17-2015 04:49 PM

Absolutely Edgar... Apologies Chris - that is beautiful work!

Mike Franzen 01-17-2015 05:03 PM

Yes, Chris Dawe's work is impeccable.

Rick Losey 01-17-2015 05:23 PM

In Personam

I have just seen both in person and let me tell you the pictures do not do them justice.
The case looks like it came out of a shop in London 100 years ago. It is just perfect for the gun. And did you see that Damascus oil pot?
And the gun..... I could shoot it all day long although Edgar will probably not allow that to happen. It throws up like it was fitted in Meriden.
What a combination.
And Edgar is not lying- I have the dated photos he sent. He did the fit-out in 3 days. At first he said to me it was a week and then I reminded him. It was 3 days. And you know it wasn't continuous work by Edgar: a little work, some tea, play with the dog and cats, change his oil, complain, post something on the Forum, complain, look at guns for sale, a little work, repeat, repeat.....
And I don't know how he finds anything in that shop.

calvin humburg 01-17-2015 06:07 PM

That is wonderful from toe to keel (that's on a boat whats the name of the metal between barrels). You gun the same kind of surroundings as mine. :)

George M. Purtill 01-17-2015 06:08 PM

Oh Yeah- the hell is his shop.

Dean Freeman 01-17-2015 06:11 PM

Love that case! Beautiful work!

wayne goerres 01-17-2015 06:47 PM

There has got to be more great stuff buried in that basement.

Mike Franzen 01-17-2015 07:43 PM

Great job on the case Edgar. You are very talented.

Todd Kaltenbach 01-17-2015 08:40 PM

That case is gorgeous! Is it walnut?

charlie cleveland 01-17-2015 08:43 PM

Dean Romig 01-18-2015 07:02 AM

Yup, keels beneath the ribs.

Rick Losey 01-18-2015 09:33 AM

Edgar

what did you use for for the corner joints?

dovetail? finger joints?

Mike Franzen 01-18-2015 10:12 AM

Looked like box joints to me

hard to tell from a top view- i see the joint line in the corner, but half blind dovetails and finger joints would both have a straight joint line there

box joint is just another name for finger joints - as well as "comb joint"

although there is a joint used to join boards end to end that some also call a finger joint

its a bit like the first time I tried to order a milkshake in New England as a kid, they shook a pint of milk and handed it to me. I told them what I wanted and the light came on - Oh you mean a Frappe

toe-mato - toe-moto

I'm not smart enough to do dovetail joints. These are plain box joints. I made a simple fixture that fit the square on the table saw, and either use a dado blade set, or just two or three combination blades. The stock (Honduras mahogany in this case) is oversized for the internal height of the box, so I just set the fence, and sawed all 8 edges. I would attach top and bottom, before I slit the box in two.
Thank you all for your flattering comments. I'm not a woodworker, unless you count chainsaws and baseball bats. I just enjoy it, when I can't be outside or in the woods.
George is right; my shop is usually a mess. Who am I kidding; it's always a mess. It's a gift.
I have 4 shops. The barn is for steam engines and Land Rovers, The sugarhouse, when not sugar season is for smaller antique machinery, the basement is loosely divided into wood and reloading on one side, and gunwork, and 'clean' work on the other. My wife refuses to give up her corner for laundry. Damn squatters.

Edgar is lying - that guy can do more fricking things than anyone I know. He has forgotten more stuff than most people know. And like always rib him- you have everything that's cool or you used to own it [before your divorce and kid's education].
And the mess? You would give serious money to have 1/2 hour to load as much of his "mess" into your car as you could. In fact, it could be a new TV show.

Dean Romig 01-18-2015 12:57 PM

Edgar is a new TV show... he just hasn't aired yet

Dave Suponski 01-18-2015 03:40 PM

I absolutely love Edgars house and out buildings! I like going to a museum. Edgar.....not so much....:rotf:

edgarspencer 01-18-2015 07:05 PM

No More Carrot Cake for you, Stosh.

Mills Morrison 01-18-2015 08:21 PM

You should go into the case business. That is awesome

Thomas L. Benson Sr. 01-18-2015 08:34 PM

Edgar: I always enjoy your humor and now your woodworking talents. Wonderful case and your shop just needs a little organizing. Thomas

edgarspencer 01-18-2015 10:07 PM

Mills, that would take all the fun out of it.
Thomas, that sounds like a good idea, except that it would take longer to organize than it would take to find anything. I'm all too easily distracted.

Gary Carmichael Sr 01-19-2015 09:14 AM

Edgar, Great work on that case, gary

Richard Flanders 01-23-2015 02:12 PM

I've always thought that organization of a shop is over rated. One just has to "know" where every little item is. That being said, I've spent the past week looking/digging off and on for my pneumatic machinists vacuum.... I know "about" where it is but.... hmm... I'm closing in... I'll find it eventually.

A neat _____________ (fill in the blank) is the sign of a sick mind.

John Dallas 01-23-2015 05:23 PM

Wasn't it Einstein who said "If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, one can only wonder what is signified by an empty desk"?

Dean Romig 01-23-2015 05:50 PM

Have you ever seen pictures of Einstein's desk?

Thanks for that Dean. I'm feeling ever so much better about my filing system. This bench is a work in progress.

Richard, I have no doubt you know, that nothing is lost, because it is precisely where it was last used.

Dave Suponski 01-23-2015 08:23 PM

A work of art Egger.....

Daryl Corona 01-23-2015 08:27 PM

Thank you Egger, now I can see I'm not alone.

paul stafford jr 01-23-2015 09:18 PM
