34" barrels

I have a friend that has three Parker 12 gauge guns with 34" pipes . Two of them are DH guns (not sure if they have ejectors or not) . And the third gun I think is a GH or VH .

He uses the two D grade guns as his sporting clays guns , not sure what the chokes are either but he shoots them very well .

Anyway I was curiouse of the scarcity of 34" guns ?

And were most of the 34" 12 gauge guns field guns or target guns ?

Mills Morrison 01-05-2015 07:18 AM

34" 12 gauges are rare and sought after. Your friend is lucky

Brian Dudley 01-05-2015 07:56 AM

Yes, to have 3 of them is a special thing.

One of the recent issues of Garden & Gun had a feature on Southern Guides. Father and son team from Mississippi pictured in a Duck blind with there "34 inch Parker". Don't have it at hand for exact reference right now.

I've got two, one a DHE and one a DH.

My SC SBT has a 34 inch barrel. It is very smooth on targets. I'd like to try it on turkeys as well. It is a great gun and draws no end of praise on the range.

If you don't mind saying how tight are they choked ?

Destry L. Hoffard 01-05-2015 06:33 PM

DHE is extra full and extra full, never measured the DH.

I have one DHE with a straight stock built in 1907. It is choked full and full. It's a beautiful gun.

I believe I saw an 8 gauge Parker listed somewhere a year or two ago that had 40" pipes .

The "Gold Hearts" gun is a 34"-30" two barrel set.

This gun Murph?

I have an old 12ga. muzzleloader with 42" tubes, it's kinda fun to get out once in a while. I was asked not to bring it back to our local Wednesday night skeet club shoot, on a calm night the smoke lingers for a long time:)

Craig,

where in central Virginia are you located?

I am in Mechanicsville near Richmond. Send me a PM

At one time I have owned as many as 7 original 34 inch guns. 6 12gauges and one a 16 gauge.

They are out there. Seem to come in groups onto the market. In 07 08 I could only find one and then by 09 2010 there were many on the market for sale.

Be patient one will show itself for certain. Uncommon guns yes. But not rare.
Now 34" small bores or a 12 on a 3 frame with 34" tubes or some other configuration makes it much harder to find them.

Have a happy new year.

John

Most I have seen have been DH or DHE straight grips with splinter forearms.

There was one DH for sale at last years Spring Southern. If memory serves me she was without a safety and double triggers.

All of mine remaining ones and ones in the past were different configs:
Most were .740 bores with 2 7/8 chambers. Weights were any where from 7 3/4 pounds to 9 pounds 5 ounces. All of my 12s were or are on #2 frames.

Go thru the serialization book. They come in runs. Something like 163 in DH grade and smaller numbers in other grades according to TPS.

Dave, thanks for the picture of the "Gold Hearts" gun. Like the Saxbe VHE, the trigger on the "Gold Hearts" gun has miraculously started to work reliably without being touched by a screwdriver.

CraigThompson 01-06-2015 05:29 PM

Wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of the 34 inchers or even a 32 incher before the Virginia State Trap Shoot 4th of July weekend for the side by side event .

Shoot in it last year with my old VH #2 frame 30" gun . But I'd kinda like to get a wee bit longer barrel for this coming year .

Bill Murphy 01-06-2015 05:42 PM

Craig, I know at least a couple of vintage gun shooters who shoot the VA State Shoot. Not that I would shoot ATA, but maybe you and these other guys could get together. OK, so I would shoot ATA if I had someone to shoot with. Is there a participant list for last year's Vintage Gun event?

That was a non registered ATA event . Lets see Danny Patton shot (he's the stock guy that a few on here use) , Gent Mitchell shot and myself . Other then a young fellow I drug along those were the only folks I knew .

Last year it was a 50 bird event . I think the guy who's the prez of the VTA wants to try and do a 100 bird race this year .

William Davis 01-06-2015 07:00 PM

I would shoot it given enough notice to shoot some trap first.

You realize we can't shoot a 10 gauge ? :rotf:

If that were the case I would use my old W&C Scott

Hey you still up for the Flying Rabbit in late February or March ?

You're more then welcome to join me at Piedmont to shoot regular trap , wobble trap or jap trap !

Bill Zachow 01-16-2015 07:09 AM

Well Charlie, I have one that would fit you and your nickname perfectly, but my son won't allow me to let it go. A 36" barreled 8 gauge, PH with twin ivories and a Silvers pad. The gun was ordered that way and is in superb cobdition. Just thought I would throw this out to get your blood pumping.

Dean Romig 01-16-2015 07:20 AM

Bill, is that the PH we featured in Parker Pages a few years ago?

Mills Morrison 01-16-2015 09:31 AM

I want someone to find the one that was shipped to Vladivastock

Bill Zachow 01-16-2015 05:25 PM

Dean, yes it is. Twist barrels with perfect bores. Charlie could really raise hell with the Mississippi deer herd with it.

charlie cleveland 01-16-2015 06:38 PM

bill you really got my blood a pumping at this moment...... if i had that gun there would be hell to pay on the deer herd for sure heck i would slip off in the morning and and see what we could come up with.....can you take a picture and show us this big gun...you have made my evening now....charlie

.

Bill Zachow 01-18-2015 07:33 AM

Thanks, Dean. We have to keep Charlie excited. Bill

Chuck Bishop 01-18-2015 09:05 AM

Wow, pictures of two PH's, one an 8 gauge and one a .410, show up on the forum recently. Approximately 72 8 gauges made with twist and 4 .410 made with Parker Steel barrels. Pretty darn rare!

charlie cleveland 01-18-2015 10:12 AM

you boys got my blood pumping real good......the ph 8 ga is one nice gun.....i can see why the grandkids want to keep this gun...charlie

Bill Murphy 01-18-2015 03:37 PM

Charlie, if you promise to come to the Southern, we'll all bring eight gauges.

charlie cleveland 01-18-2015 07:50 PM

i wish i could promise bill..maybe in the fall i can get hooked up with you fellows..charlie
