Dark and overcast so I didn't take any pictures but when we picked up birds at quitting time I did think the leg on the far left bird was interesting. Hunting on the Walpole Reservation in Ontario.

Lost my original lanyard years ago when somebody broke into my truck but the new one is getting a few on it. Feels funny that, as many years as I've been at it, all my bands are 1-800. Everything on my old string was Avise and even a Fish and Wildlife. Losing that lanyard still haunts me every time I look at the new one.

Can anyone tell me why some birds are "Redlegs" and some are "yellowlegs"?

Old wives tale I've heard is that the Redlegs are recent arrivals from the north.

Destry L. Hoffard 12-19-2014 10:09 AM

I've heard all those same stories John but never really knew the truth. I turned the band in online and it was rung as a hatchling in July 2013 in Wisconsin. I was surprised it was that young. Bird was HUGE, half again the size of the other drake in the pile.

how does that silver growth get there and does it hurt the bird  good shooting scott

Somewhere I've got some great shots of a goose banding project I worked on. I'll try to find them.

State Fish and Game work with the Feds and rocket nets birds feeding that they have fed for a few weeks. Bands are put on and birds are released. At least that is how it is done in NH. Does not hurt the birds.

Here in Downeast ME, the Capitol of Black Duck central, those redlegs belong on hybrids. We have a small population of Mallards here that interbreed with Black ducks. I've seen some pretty cool color combinations on a few mallards.

Some 1 3/8 ounce loads of Kent TM #3.

Season is still open in Ontario till the 11th and we're getting teens type temperatures here during the night. If Lake St. Clair glazes completely over, the diving duck shooting will get mighty interesting on the St. Clair River. Hope the cold weather holds......
