A Spring-like Morning
The Red-Winged Blackbirds are here - heard them for the first time about ten minutes ago - and now that the water is finally open, the Canadas are boisterously defending nesting territories here on the Shawsheen Meadows and Ballard Vale Flats. The diving ducks are always the first to arrive here as soon as there is just a few square yards of open water, with the pretty little Hooded Mergansers very obvious among them. I think the back of 'Old Man Winter' is finally broken in these parts.

Dean,Thanks for that little spring observation. Yesterday as I walked out of the house the gackles were back raising hell but no Robins yet. Sure feeling like spring here in So.CT. Supposed to hit 50 today! But I am being causiously optomistic we have had some big snows here in March.
Can,t wait for the "shack nasties" to disappear..... |
March...in like a lamb, out like a lion!

We have had more snow here this year than I can ever remember ,the weather folks ,claim we have broke all kinds of records ,two weeks ago we started seeing robins ,and last week going down our lane ,in the jeep ,three Woodcock flushed in front of us ! I don't know how they possibly could have survived the deep snow and frozen over creeks that pass through our place ,but hopefully they did !
|
Robins! Thats good to hear Russ. That means they are on the way! Ya and I hope those Woodcock survive too!
|
Those Robins seem to have moved on ,as well as the Woodcock ,Take a look  out your window Dave ? Maybe they have made it by now !
|
I have heard the sandhill cranes flying overhead for the last two days. It's hard to believe, but we will be planting corn in six weeks!

Guys,
Remember what Harry said......... Cause it is very true....:) |
Eric,Believe me..I am enjoying the weather thats in front of me right now.But with a keen eye over my shoulder as to whats sneaking up. Having lived in New England all my life I find the old verse"If ya don,t like the weather wait five minutes" to be very true....:)

A friend of mine does power line construction and he just got home from doing storm work in northern Vermont and we enjoyed the day with some Beagles and the .22's.
I heard the Turkeys gobbeling this morning around 6, no Robins or Woodcock but I saw sone Geese flying north today. I'm looking forward to the shooting season. |

We took an overnight drive to Vermont Saturday morning and had a great time with old friends. We saw flocks of turkeys in the cornfields that were cut in September.
We just rolled into the driveway about twenty minutes ago and heard some noise from the trees above the driveway.... twenty-one turkeys had flown up to roost there for the night. The Mount Washington Hotel is one of the places we visited this morning. A stunning grand old hotel that received guests from as many as fifty-seven trains in a day during its heyday. Today there are no passenger trains to the area. |
