Vent ribs
Does anyone know off hand the height (average) height of Parker vent ribs?
Were they ever any different? |
John, the vent ribs I have seen all look to me to be about the same height. I never bothered to measure them but they seem to be about 3/16" higher than the standard rib height.

Vent rib
John
I have one or two I will measure them and let you know tomorrow Alton |
Were the stocks on vent rib guns straighter to accommodate the higher rib?
|
A ventilated rib on a Parker shotgun was an option and generally installed on a specially ordered gun. The stock on such a gun was likely higher but such a gun, being specially ordered, was usually stocked to the shooter's requested dimensions.

Since this was never really answered in any detail to the OP question, I am now asking that the owners of any Factory vent rib guns would do a little homework and provide as much of the following as possible; 1. year/serial #(whatever suits you) 2. Grade 3. Gauge 4. Barrel Length 5. Barrel Composition 6. Choke - R/L 7. Ejectors/Extractors 8. Triggers(single or double) 9. Stock(straight or pistol grip 10. Butt(pad or ??) 11. Forend (beavertail or splinter) 12. ?? (whatever you want to provide) I have some of these guns and I am interested in what else is out there. Depending on what kind of response i get I would like to write up and publish the results. You can post here or I would prefer that you send me a PM, email. thank you Patrick gunpart@cableone.net |
Great idea Patrick
I have one and when I return to CT I will report it to you. |
Oops I also have two orphaned VR barrels sets that I forgot.
|
I once owned 230760 a CHE 30" Double Trap with vent rib of course. The PGCA has no information on the gun other than it is one of only three 30" CHE Double Trap guns in this configuration.

John:
Post a few pictures of the WIDE solid rib trap gun I sold you, don't forget pictures fore end ----the rail road track rib!! Allan |
A DHE double trap 30 inch fluid steel barrels choked M/F, PG Hawkins pad,BTF,SST.
A DHE 20 30 inch fluid steel barrels choked IC/M (undoubtly someone opened them:cuss:) straight grip,SST, BTF serial #222223. A GHE 16 (The Hollywood gun) two bbl set, both 28 inches fluid steel. One is SKT/SKT the other M/F. straight stock, SST, two BTF, checkered but. If you need them for the article I'll get the serial number but they are way back in the safe. |
Rich, do both sets of barrels on the Hollywood gun have vent ribs?
. |
Yes they do. Somewhere there is a letter on this in that it was ordered as a two bbl set with all the options. It went from Parker to Marshall Field in Chicago then to Alex Ker's in Hollywood.

Rich, if you need someone to take them out into the light and give them a healthy work-out, just send them here, I'll be happy to oblige!!! :rotf: |
Thanks Mike but that would still mean I had to dig them out. If I did that then I'd have the numbers. If there is enough response for a PP article I'll happily dig them out.
|
Dig them out Rich!
How's that for a response in support of a Parker Pages article? But then of course, Mr. PML didn't say it would be published in PP. . |

2: AAHE; 3: 12; 4: 34"; 5: Whitworth; 6: Full/Full; 7: Ejectors; 8: Single - upgraded from a Parker Single to a Miller single by Miller. 9: Custom Parker Grip with a melted tang into finger grooves; 10: Pad; 11: Yes - both; 12: I could add a lot - but it is, I believe the first Parker Vent Rib double - made for my great-grandfather, passed down from his son, my Grandfather, who passed away 41 years ago yesterday, at the age of 69. Hope this helps, John D. |

To get back to this thread that Dr. Truitt started, Vent Rib guns are almost always specially ordered and thus by definition, special.
|
Year: 1927/221256
Grade: VHE Gauge: 12 bore Barrel Length: 32" Barrel Composition: Fluid Steel/Vulcan Choke: .035 both barrels Ejectors Trigger: Parker Bros. 2 screw single Stock: Pistol Grip Butt: Silvers Pad Forend: Beavertail Weight: 8 lbs. even Rib: Vent rib In answer to Doc Truitt the vent rib measures .230 at the breech,.255 mid barrel and .135 at the muzzle The height difference at mid barrel is due to the swamp in the barrels. |
Dave,
I know this gun! About 10 years ago I took my father to the Ohio gun collectors show in Wilmington, Ohio. There was a photography challenged guy from Maryland there with this gun. I picked it up many times over the weekend. Kevin McCormick gave me shooting instructions on imaginary birds as I was pointing it, and I came THIS CLOSE to buying it. I found an old beater CH instead and your gun went back to Maryland with no-abla-post-photo guy. So, I went from Idaho all the way to Ohio to NOT buy it just so you could. :) Patrick |
Pat, Thank You for being so very kind.... This gun has been everywhere with me and I shoot the hell outta it...:)
Da guy from Maryland told me when I bought it that the single trigger was a bit balky but it has performed 100% since the day I first shot it. |
Dave and Patrick, you guys are really hurting me. I apologize for letting this cat out of the house, but we can't keep them all. It is quite some gun, although not mine any more.
|
"No habla post photo"...Stop it Pat - you're killin me!!:rotf::biglaugh::rotf::biglaugh::rotf:
