Damascus with NO pattern?
I just bought a nice G Grade (or is it a GH?) and the rib clearly states "Damascus Steel" but I can't find any pattern anywhere on the barrels (30"). They looks blued. All serial numbers match. What gives?

Someone blued the barrels? Wouldn't be the first time. Photos?
|
Maybe I'm not looking hard enough

Yep. Someone blued Damascus barrels.
|
Too bad, looks nice though.
|
I think I can see your pattern !
|
Nothing to worry about. There are a few guys that can redo your barrels so they look like they should.
|
Dale Edmonds can work wonders on those. I can see the old pattern too.
There are a number of others worthy for the task too, but I have first hand knowledge of Dale's work |
I see the Damascus pattern too. Maybe they were 'browned' a bit too brown. If you want to see the Damascus pattern you should send the barrels to Dale Edmonds or Brad Bachelder to have the barrels refinished. With shipping should cost in the $400 range.

Sam
I would not worry about the finish on the barrels as much as the head of your stock has been pinned in two places or are them some type of chip repairs or something else ? |
I like them just the way they are. I would not have them refinished.
|
its there, to about the stock
|
Why the worry about the stock repair other than it wasn't hid very well. If someone ran a couple of screws and epoxy in it the stock should be good to go.

I've had Brad redo about 5 or 6 barrels and feel even on a " beater " it's well worth the money. What's another 4 to 500 dollars when you can then see the beautiful Damascus barrels ? Making them is a lost art never to be repeated.

Thanks for all the PGCA members who helped me confirm my weapon's barrels were Damascus and had been blued sometime in the last 100 years.
I sent the barrels to Buck Hamlin and the stock to Clint Meier and they did a spectacular job repairing the Damascus, barrel dents, ugly previous stock repair and recheckering. I highly recommend them. Note: I asked Buck to "brown" the barrels instead of "Black and White" because I wanted the contrast. I know it's not factory, but I prefer it. Sam |
Wow! Awesome results

Fish-tail lever and a killer stick of wood: love it.
|
Sam, you needed not have worried, the black and white would have turned brown without much help and you would have had better contrast to start with. The Britts do em brown, the Americans do em B/W.

I used to shy away from damascus guns, but no longer. There is an Elsie No 1 grade coming to a local pawn shop. I have yet to see, it. They want $750. No 1's can be pretty nice, damascus and some engraving. If it is a good one it will be mine. |
I have a CD some one made for a old 8MM of workers in Belgium making Damascus barrels. It's very interesting - there are two guys in wooden shoes, one with a big hammer and the other with a small hammer. Not hard to guess who the master was [ small hammer].

I just watched the cd. I had bought it at one of the silent auctions. It is amazing how they made them so consistent.
