Quail hunting anyone??

I would like to put together a group of members for a Southern Quail hunt at Morrison Pines in Moultrie GA. The venue comes highly recommended from our members Mills and Julia Morrison who are in no way connected to Morrison Pines.

The dates are obviously as yet undetermined but either the first week or the last week in January 2015 is still open. I'm thinking of a three day hunt and during the week is more available then dates encompassing a weekend. I have spoken with Jerry York from Morrison Pines and the details are as follows.

The daily rate is $750.00 which includes meals, lodging (single occupancy), hunting with 20 birds/day + or - field transportation. NOT included are gratuities, GA sales tax @ 7% and a $12 preserve hunting license. Air port pick up is available from either Albany, GA or Tallassee, FL. I didn't inquire as to the cost of this service as a three day hunt will entail 6 guns for me so I'd drive.

Information is available on there web sit you can go to Information@morrisonpines.com Also Mills did a Parker pages story on one of their recent hunts there not to long ago.

There is no better way to escape the winter in either the Midwest or New England than a nice Southern Quail hunt. If your interested please e-mail me at rlanderson410@msn.com or by PM. Lets put together the first PGCA Quail hunt.

Morrison Pines

I hunted with Jerry York when he ran Ashburn Hill across the road for about 8-10 years. I have been to Morrison Pines as well. The hospitality is first rate, guides, dogs, birds and food are excellent. Jerry and Buddy have a loyal following with guests dating back to the 70's. They have become lifelong friends. I have tried many of the South Georgia Spots but these guys will have you coming back.

Count me in..

Rich Anderson 05-07-2014 07:18 PM

Greg i'll be glad to count you in, will you be flying?:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

This amazes me that the price of hunting Quail in Georgia has come to this in just fifty short years. WOW!!!!!!!!

Rich Anderson 05-08-2014 10:29 AM

Compared to some of the other locations this is a very good deal and it's pretty much all inclusive. Due to personal reasons I had to cancel a hunt last year at the last minute. Three days of hunting crowded $5K.

Eric Eis 05-08-2014 10:54 AM

Well Rich you already know this but count me in. The price seems to be very fair. I will be looking forward for this hunt.

Mills Morrison 05-08-2014 11:01 AM

Julia and I highly recommend Morrison Pines. A first class operation all around. We go every year. I am helping one of the local Judges here organize a trip there through the SC Bar, but if that does not pan out (and we don't have other conflicts), count us in. We'll be hunting there sometime in the upcoming season, regardless.

Rich Anderson 05-08-2014 06:12 PM

The last week in Jan 2015 is available. We can go either in the beginning of the week or the latter but there is a big group returning Saturday the 28th. We can do a Wednesday -Saturday where we would hunt a half day Wednesday and Saturday. This might work well for those of us who have the long drive as we would leave Saturday afternoon.

Let me know what might work better for those who have committed to coming and those of you who are still thinking about it.

Mills Morrison 05-09-2014 10:00 AM

One thing about Morrison Pines, you will enjoy the other guests there. Some are double gun fans, but all that we have met are interested in the same kind of thing there. If you go by yourself or with just a few, don't worry about being lonely.

Rich Anderson 09-09-2014 02:57 PM

This trip will be here before you know it. A great Quail hunt on the table. Mills and Julia will be joining us who else want's to escape Old Man Winter next January?

Angel Cruz 09-09-2014 03:48 PM

Rich, count me in. God willing I should be able to make the drive up.

Mills Morrison 09-09-2014 03:56 PM

Glad you can join us Angel.

Eric Eis 09-09-2014 04:00 PM

Be great to meet you in person Angel. Looking forward to it.

Bill Holcombe 09-09-2014 04:03 PM

Wow ya'll have fun! Jealous of the guarunteed birds. Will be heading down to south Texas in a little over a month for some Quail!

Rich Anderson 09-09-2014 07:02 PM

Angel it will be good to come face to face and over a bird dog no less. it just couldn't get any better.

Angel Cruz 09-09-2014 07:46 PM

My sentiments exactly Rich. Getting to meet you guys will be special.

Mike.Smith 09-09-2014 08:03 PM

I'm still planning on this one as well. Should be a great time!

Mike

Eric Eis 09-10-2014 12:41 PM

Mike I am looking forward to shooting with you again. Eric

Rich Anderson 09-10-2014 02:25 PM

Mike will you want/need a certain Damascus 16ga to use?

Greg Phillips 09-10-2014 04:14 PM

Still planning on coming for a couple of days and possibly bringing one more. I have been hunting with Jerry & Buddy for about 10 yrs, they are great folks.

You aren't paying for the quail hunting. At that rate you are paying for the difference between staying at a Quality Inn and The W Hotel, which is fine as many people have their wives along and enjoy the service and pampering. I can hunt at a place not too far outside of Atlanta for $8/bird. Nostalgic? Hell no, but it gives my dog a little work. I frankly do not know the difference, as I've been too scared to stay at a place like that, if only to avoid deciding that I enjoy the high life. Sounds like a heckuva nice weekend with good folks.

Rich Anderson 09-11-2014 08:02 AM

I have done a couple of these type hunts and it is a memorable experience. I haven't done one in well over 20 years however and wanted to go at least one more time. It's the atmosphere (IMHO) that your paying for, Mule drawn wagons, hunt master who is in charge of the dogs and the hunt, the Southern hospitality and everything that goes with it. It's like stepping back in time for a few days.

Angel Cruz 09-11-2014 08:29 AM

That's what I would like to experience and this is as close as I'm going to get.
Rich, can we bring our dogs? My boy Nash would kill me if he knew I went hunting with out him:)

Rich Anderson 09-11-2014 09:26 AM

Angel you would have to check with them but I would doubt it. In the past the plantantions use their own dogs and handlers. I know what you mean as Daisy goes nuts whenever I go into the gun room. She hasn't learned the difference between targets and hunting seasons but gunner never did figure it out either, they just know guns:)

Angel Cruz 09-11-2014 11:54 AM

I just called them and they do allow hunters to bring their dogs. Woo hoo!!

Eric Eis 09-11-2014 02:46 PM

Is a 16 ga considered too large of a bore ? Kind of like to try a new gun but if the rule is 20 or 28 ga I'll follow that too.....

Rich Anderson 09-11-2014 02:53 PM

I'll probably take the Venebles 16ga hammer gun so bring the Wesley Richards. What I think is frowned on is the auto 12ga. Bring your 28 skeet gun as well.

greg conomos 09-13-2014 08:43 AM

OK, I admit I'm out of touch with hunting prices but that seems scaldingly high. $750/day and your old lady doesn't even get to sleep in a bed? By the time you get with airport pickup, license, 'gratuity', and all the rest you'd probably be dropping $900/day. I just don't see the value in a $900/day quail hunt especially if you happened to have a teenage son or two who you were trying to involve.

What the heck does that mean??
This is all inclusive and a real bargain at $750/day to include meals, lodging, guide, dogs, staff, beverages etc. Is a $40,0000 DHE 28 a bargain? It is if you want one and have the $40K.

This is 2014 and nothing is the way it was. You can hunt birds just as effectively with a $500 Remington 870 as you can with a $10,000 Parker. Does that mean you don't see the value in the Parker? I'm sorry you don't see the value in this and are more than welcome to stay home.

Angel Cruz 09-13-2014 12:15 PM

Rich, at 750.00/day all inclusive, this is a real good deal. The least expensive I found before you mention this was 950.00/day all inclusive but only 12 birds per day. Anything over that was an extra 7.50/bird.

will evans 09-13-2014 01:44 PM

I don't know why people feel the need to address how someone else decides to spend their money. Value is all based upon your own individual expectations. The key to me would be how the birds flew. I find it irritating to have to kick them up, but if you get to shoot birds that flush and fly as if they are wild then it would be a helluva bargain. That's hard to find these days.

My dog would just embarrass me if I took her on such a hunt. She would run in for a quick roadside snack every time one of the horses lifted their tail. I think she likes the grains.

:rotf: My boy Nash did that while on a hunt test. It must have tasted good cause he went back for two more. They were the perfect bite size for him:rotf:

Rich Anderson 09-13-2014 02:59 PM

I think every dog enjoys a Road Apple from time to time, Willie will turn right around and get them while their still hot from the factory:eek:. I'm happy to have the plantation furnish the dog power, these dogs see more birds in a season than our dogs will in a lifetime. I have heard nothing but good things about Morrison Pines and I'm positive the birds will fly strong and hard, they wouldn't be in business if they didn't. I'll still bring the 410 along though.:rotf:

You usually can get some more money but not necessarily replace the memory.
James

Russ Jackson 09-13-2014 06:03 PM

I just wish I could go !!!!!!!!!!!!:crying: I would start with the 410 and then give the 28 a go !!!!!!!!!!!!! I also embarrass myself on the Golf Course so I wouldn't mind missing a few Quail in front of friends ! :)

charlie cleveland 09-14-2014 12:06 AM

you boys shoot one for me...charlie

William Davis 09-14-2014 06:32 AM

I took a 4 day Georgia Plantation Quail trip dozen years ago. It was worth every penny spent. Watching the dogs alone makes it worthwhile. Were else are you going to see half a dozen good bird dogs working same time. I got so into the dog work couple of times rode one of the Horses instead of shooting.

Of course I did not own a Parker then

William

Mike.Smith 11-03-2014 03:13 PM

Did we lock down some dates for this yet? Are we doing the later part of the last week in January? I'm trying to make sure this gets on my Calendar before things start to book up.

M.

Rich Anderson 11-03-2014 06:00 PM

YES dates are set and I thought I put them in one of the posts. I believe its the last week in Jan, arrive on Wednesday hunt a 1/2 day Wed full day Thurs-Fri and a 1/2 day Sat and depart Sat pm. I'll call them and confirm but that's what's on my calendar.

Rich Anderson 11-04-2014 10:41 AM

I just spoke to Jerry York at Morrison pines and these are the dates we have. Arrive Wed 1/28 for lunch and an afternoon hunt. hunt all day the 29th and 30th and a half day on 31st and depart that afternoon. The 28th is a Wednesday and the 31st a Sat. Jerry is doing this on the honor system so no deposit required:eek: he know Mills and Julia as well as Greg Phillips all of whom are members here.
I would like to give him a fairly accurate head count so they can figure meals. PLEASE PM me if you are committed to coming. This will be a great hunt and I'm already looking forward to leaving some of the MI winter behind for South Georgia.
