Storage of Lead Shot
How is the best way to store lead shot?
I have some old bags that have degraded-- some pellets coated with white powder.:crying: Can it be cleaned and used---or should it be disposed? Is it contagious--and if so how can I keep this dreaded lead disease from puking all over the expensive bags of shot I just bought? Thanks. |
It is a result of oxidization. I don't know if that white powder is considered to be lead oxide, but if it is I have read that lead oxide is dangerous. I have handled this stuff since I was a kid and have never suffered any ill effects from it.
You should conduct an in-depth study of just what this stuff is and proceed appropriately. |

Dean you set yourself up and he came back with a great comeback...:rotf: |
I've got to admit it... Pete nailed me on that one!

I have shot that has accumulated that oxidation as well. I just loaded it up and shot it. Rotate your stock pile of shot and you will be fine.

You're just not shooting enough. My shot bags never lay in the basement longer than a month or two before they're used. Well, I did just buy ten bags so they may last three or four months. What's everyone laughing at, Dean looks like a normal adult male to me. May have to take that back - looks like a auto loading shotgun in his hands.

Paul,
Your are absolutely right, I am mighty rusty right now. I have only seen this in partial bags of shot sizes I do not use much and which is bought ($15/bag) many years ago. But with the problems with lead cost skyrocketing, a year from now we may wish we had stored more of that cheap $48 a bag lead. I think the oxidation answer us right, and am beginning to suspect that storage in tightly sealed cans may be the solution to preventing it. |
The Eagle brand shot I just bought was in a vacuum sealed plastic bag inside a canvas bag. Wonder if the vacuum seal will prevent oxidation, should with no air in the bag?

Robin,
That is a great quote. Also, I love your "Quail Poodle". |
