Anybody want to shoot some Parkers in Georgia?

Hey everyone,

Not sure if this is the correct forum so, mods, please move if it should go somewhere else.

I am new to the forum (about a week) and was talking to another member yesterday about getting together and doing some shooting at Cherokee Rose in Griffin, GA.

I got to thinking that since I am trying to get a crash course in Parkers before I buy my first, that I would open it up to anyone that is near enough to come shoot with us. Selfishly, I hope that you would bring one or two (or a dozen) of your favorite parkers so that I could get a good hands on look at them as you shoot. It would also be great to meet some of the nearby members.

I was thinking one Saturday or Sunday in March but am very flexible. Let's start with just a reply that says you would be interested and then we can agree on some details once we see who all replies. From my perspective, the more the merrier. So far every single person that has replied to one of my threads or PM'd me on the site has been exceptionally kind and friendly so I think it would be fun to get together, meet in person and try to break some clays. (if I hit more than 1 I will be happy if that helps you with my "experience" level)

What portion of goerga is griffin in. I might be interested if I don't have to drive 3 hours to get there. Would this be on a clays course or just some sort of informal type thing. Let me know what your thinking.

Griffin is south of the Atlanta airport maybe 20-30 minutes towards Macon. The range is Cherokee Rose. They have trap, 5 stand and clays and I am open to shooting anything. I have done mainly trap and skeet in the past but have always wanted to try some clays. I hope you are close enough to consider it.

I am in Lagrange Ga. Apparently I am not to far from you. This sounds like an interesting idea. There are several other members that live in Georgia. Mills Morison lives in Savanna and their is one up in the northern part of the state. I am going to have to get out a map and see were Griffin is.

jeffkinser 02-22-2014 04:12 PM

Think Nascar track and it will put you pretty close.

Hopefully all the others will start chiming in as well soon.

I am about 2 hours from LaGrange. My son is in college in Albany and I almost go through LaGrange every time I visit. I have eaten at the Cracker Barrel at the LaGrange exit many times.

I would certainly be interested in shooting. Field trial season will be over for me in two weeks so keep me in the loop.

Jeff if you want to see a lot of Parkers please consider coming to the Southern SXS shoot the end of April. It's in NC so it's not far compared to the distances some of us travel.

John what breed of dogs are you field trailing?

Mills Morrison 02-23-2014 09:32 AM

We might be able to swing it too. We have been talking about getting out of town for a weekend.

jeffkinser 02-23-2014 11:41 AM

Unfortunately...I coach track and that weekend is the sectional track meet...I was planning to come before I checked the dates.

wayne goerres 02-23-2014 04:17 PM

Jeff my time is pretty open and I would be interested in meeting you and maybe doing a little shooting.

John Davis 02-23-2014 05:31 PM

Rich, GSP's. I also judge.

Mills Morrison 02-23-2014 05:35 PM

If we are able to come, we will be there. The first weekend of SC turkey season is out though.

Harryreed 02-23-2014 06:35 PM

Turkey season until April will consume most of my free time. After that I will consider other dates.

Rich Anderson 02-23-2014 09:19 PM

John GSP's are my favorite breed and the best one I ever had was Gunner but there is no dust on Daisy either.

jeffkinser 02-23-2014 09:42 PM

John, where do you do/judge the trials? Is it open to the public to watch? I would love to watch the dogs work.

Jeff, the GSP club of South Georgia holds three trials a year. One in November, one in December and one in February. The Atlanta GSP club holds several trials in Jackson, GA. I'll be in Ocala, Fl., at a trial this weekend and Quincy, Fl., the following weekend. (Running and judging) That will end the season which usually runs from about November through March here in the south. Our south Georgia trials are good ones to attend because we run a gallery wagon for non-horse back riders.

Mills Morrison 02-24-2014 10:14 AM

That sounds like a lot of fun

jeffkinser 03-09-2014 05:11 PM

I got to shoot at cherokee rose today...very last minute thing...took my wife and 13 year old son who bought his first 20 gauge side be side yesterday... (cheap non parker)...we only shot 50 each and I have to say 100 would have been painful at the end...I shot my new 16 gauge trojan

I hit 25 and my son hit 21 so I have some practice to do.

We all enjoyed it and the course was fun and challenging.

let's pick a Parker day in the next several weeks and shoot

Jeff what kind of trap are you shooting. Is it what they call five stand. I my self am some what of an armature so I wouldn't be much competition. I have never shot any kind of formal trap. It would be nice to meet some of the other Georgia parker members.

jeffkinser 03-09-2014 08:29 PM

They have 5 stand but we shot the Sporting Clays. For me, it is definitely not about the competition and more about just getting out and enjoying the time outdoors with a gun in my hand.

My son on the other hand made sure every time he "schooled" me on a station!

It would be fun to meet and trade some stories. They were not very busy at about 2pm and are open until 6pm.

Saturday's are a little tough for me since my son plays Lacrosse, but Sunday afternoons work well. They open at 1pm.

Let me know if a get together happens, I will gladly make the drive to Griffin. I have a buddy and we have been shooting nearly every weekend up in Cumming, but a new course is ok by me. Hopefully he'll be welcome as well even though he doesn't have a Parker, his 20ga Utica Fox Sterlingworth may not be a Parker, but still a fine shotgun.
