Duck Decoys
I know this is off topic, and the moderator is welcome to delete this, but I would like some help identifying the carver of a couple of nice decoys I have. I have been told they are from Napa Valley. My email is wjdiii@bellsouth.net. I can send pictures if anyone can help.

Post the pictures Bill, would like to see them.
|
Sure, why not post them here?
|
I would be happy too but, even though I am not computer illiterate, I can't figure out how to post. If I send them to you will you do it? Send me your email if you are willing. They are very nice decoys. William Dunn

william just send them to me and I'll post them erfabian3@metrocast.net

Oh My! Nice stuff. Are those birds from the Illinois area?
|
I bought these from a friend in Chicago who told me they were from Wisconsin. I took them to a free appraisal in Memphis by Guyette and Schmidt and they told me they were from the Napa Valley. I have no idea where they are from. I would like to know the region and carver let me know. Thanks. William Dunn

I'm sure no expert on decoys, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night - I've not seen any discussion of West Coast decoys that nice in my reading.
|
I find decoys just as interesting as Parkers.
Just today I purchased a decoy book of Joel Barbers Rog |
Barbers book is very good but probably not good for identifying, exactly, the carver. Check with Christies or Sothebys--one of them had a decoy auction several years ago. They could probably give you a good ID from a picture.
|
You may also want to contact the decoy museum at Havre de Grace, Maryland for info.
Best Regards, George |
I have been to the decoy museum in Havre de Grace three times and is it ever interesting. I am rather proud that it is on Giles St. , same as my name but I rather doubt the street was named after me or my ancestors.

Have you tried westcoastdecoys.com? They have a lot of information and decoys listed by the various areas they were made. Very interesting decoy site.
|
If Guyette and Schmidt said they were Napa Valley I'd say that's probably right. They're the top dealers in decoys and have been for quite awhile. If they couldn't put a name to the carver I doubt anybody can.
