the old thermometer said 0 degrees this morning at my house my dad lives 1/2 mile away and it was 3 degrees there. the snow passed me by...gotta check on things..charlie

seriously - cover up - watch out for frost bite if there is any breeze and you are out for more than a few minutes

Checking in from Ga. Its cold and snow covered here.

It's 22 here with about 3/4" of ice, I live 1/2 mile from the Gulf.

I actually like the cold. I just don't like everything shutting down around here and being cooped up.

Charlie, Been kinda cold here in Raleigh N.C. got 3 inches of snow last night, going down to ten tonite, would not usually be a problem but my furnace went out on the bus Monday and the guy will not be here to fix it till friday, but it has a built in heater for the waterbays so do not worry about them freezing I put two electric heaters inside was 57 inside this morning and was 19 outside, after tonite the worst will be over with I hope, gary

Not kidding there. Was negative 12 yesterday morning. Thought I was in Pellston. This afternoon it hit 18 and it felt like a heat wave.

Here in CT its been cold....Damn cold...for a long long time.

Still cold here in N GA. Already 18 degrees at 9 PM. Hopefully this snow will be gone by weekend and we can get back to normal.

Minus 10 yesterday morning and a balmy plus 2 this morning. Shot 5-stand last weekend at 6 degrees with 15 mph wind. At least it was not snowing. No, the birds do not break any better in the cold; just harder to hit with all the coats and gloves on. Still beats sitting inside and watching TV. Now that grouse season is over spring can come any time.

Did you have much success on grouse during the second season? I had hoped to make it up for a few days but it never worked out. I'm heading up to Germania tomorrow morning with a friend to check on his camp and maybe do a little scouting for some new grouse covers.

It was -4 when I walked out the door this morning. I'll take the cold over the summer heat/humidity every time. I've been working an outside project since mid December. After a few days to a week, the body acclimates and becomes more accustomed to these temps. The only days that really bother me are the ones like yesterday with constant 10-20mph winds.

Late season was a bit better than earlier with regard to birds located. Still, it was a pretty poor season. The late season birds were holding well for the dogs but ran off and flushed or flushed from trees. Spooky, old birds are tough.

I will relate this story though as it has to do with the cold. It was a snowy, windy, and cold day. I don't remember the temperature but it was darned cold - so cold I had to wear heavy gloves to keep my hands functioning. Both setters went on point in an old apple orchard with lots of multi-flora rose on the ground. The dogs on point on the opposite side of a barbed wire fence about 20 yards distant. I walked up to the fence and made a ruckus to get the bird to fly to no avail. Anybody that has hunted grouse knows what will happen if you try and cross the fence. Well, cross I did and still no flush. I walked to within 10 yards of the dogs thinking this may be an unproductive point when out goes the bird in the relative open no less. An easy shot for grouse - as easy as they come. I thumbed the safety while keeping my eye on the bird, then pushed it again and again without getting it off. My heavily gloved thumb just sliding over the top. I had no choice but to watch a beautiful bird, in what seemed like lazy flight, just sail away, a nice full fan signalling his departure. Damn cold! Yea, the dogs looked at me like, you gotta be kidding. Well, that's late season grouse in the cold. Good for a long, hard laugh.

I'm a recent (within the last 5 years) addict to grouse hunting. In that short time, it seems the others who I've come to know who share the same affliction also share the same character flaw of optimism when it comes to pursuing grouse. That, or maybe we're all just masochists who are a bit touched?
