0 grade a good first parker ?
looking at buying my first parker bros sxs . I wanted a hammerless 10ga but haven't seen any for sale recently . Pugs has a R grade lifter im looking at which is a 0 grade correct ? I really wanted my 3rd 10 ga to be hammerless since I have 1 hammergun and just put a deposit on my second one. but I also want a parker bros 10 ga finally , it would also be my first American double . im thinking of getting a pga membership nextweek aswell

Don't buy a gun you don't want or don't need just cause it's there.
Be patient. Keep looking for a hammerless 10 ga. They are out there and the right one will find its way to your gun safe if you are patient. |
I know your right , how hard would it be to find a hammerless 10 ga parkers for 1500$ or so ? did they make them in a Trojan grade or 0 ?
|
I strongly endorse that you GET THE MEMBERSHIP. If you care about gun value, originality, etc, then I also suggest you get a copy of the Parker Story and The Parker Serialization Book. Guns are everywhere with non-factory modifications that you might want to be able to identify before plunking down the cash on a nice Parker. The Parker Story is expensive, but you won't lose money on the investment.
Once you get the gun bug it is hard to delay buying, but I promise you the supply of Parker's isn't going to vanish during the time you take you edumucate yourself a little further on the particulars of Parker shotguns. |

1st - yes - join up - well worth it
2nd -agreed - buy what you like not what just shows up -patience grasshopper (how old do you need to be to get that one ?) a R quality is the letter designation for a 0 grade 10 gauge hammer gun. I just picked one up as a project. My third 10 was going to be hammerless, now maybe my fourth will be. |
You might find a hammerless parker for short money but a more realistic figure for a low grade 10ga parker in reasonable shape is 2200. to 2500.00.

All very good points here. Addressing the title of your thread, any grade Parker makes a good first Parker. My first was a lowly Trojan and it is still my favorite.

the R grade has stub twist barrels , ive read that stub twist was more prone to pitting than other grades of barrels back then . Is 1750$ to much for a 0 grade lifter 10 ga when they sell for half that ? Aslo ive seen a L1 hammer gun for sale but no idea what a "L1" grade is ive never seen it mentioned . Its hard buying these old doubles when your young as me but I set my money aside for these old guns because I love owning and shooting them. I will more than likely get a membership ive heard some interesting things comes onto the for sale forum.

My R letters with Twist, not stub twist.

well I could always get a cheaper hammerless 10ga and buy a parkers 10 ga hammergun . my bonehill probably counts as a project gun it has a slight wobble to the action and pitted right barrel. But she shoots fine for the money .But on my second 10 I decided I wanted something nicer and put my money on a edwinson green hammer gun with a beautiful brown Damascus pattern . I like every old 10 ga sxs(not the Spanish ones) I see that is shootable just about . |
OH , your barrels look like mine . I wanted to get them refinished but figured it wasn't worth it on a 500$ gun and found a better grade with already nice barrels .
Wasn't stub twist made from weaker materials like horse shoes ? this is just what ive read |
L1 is a Grade 1 with Laminated Steel barrels.
|
The seller says its 1 or 919 made and it has excellent bores . doesn't look like different to me though then the lower grades . I like the wood on the 0 grade better it has a reddish color . it will be probably 2 months but I notice alot of these guns have been up for sale for a long long time . I think though the 0 gradw would be a good gun the have the barrels refinished on since it already in decent shape . the L1 is in decent shape but it somewhat plain looking for the price imo
