Wanted info Prospect Hall vintagers shoot

This sounds like a great time from last years post. I would like to join the fun in 2014. Its only 4 hours from my home in Ohio...(-: Need info: best place to stay for couple, and all the planed events. Would love to see a 410 shoot! Thanks all... SXS ohio

Daryl Corona 01-05-2014 09:39 AM

Stay tuned, Kenny. As the time gets closer we will fill you in on all the particulars. You will love this venue and I'm looking forward to putting a face with your name.

Dave Noreen 01-05-2014 10:35 AM

Interesting. I've heard there were only 18 shooters, that some of the big dealers that were supposed to be there weren't, and that another big dealer packed up and left after one day. What is the truth?

Mark Ouellette 01-05-2014 10:54 AM

I was there and there were many more than 18 shooters!

It was a nice shoot with some mid-sized dealers attending. I scored a couple of Lefevers at a great price and fell in love with a gun which I acquired later that summer. I also saw and handled guns from Reuters collection brought by their caretaker Jonathan E. Those included a B Grade Parker 8 gauge and many Becker-built AH Fox guns!

So, it was a nice shoot not as big or as fun as Hausmann's NE SxS Classic but good nevertheless. Work will preclude my attendance this year but I encourage those within a day's drive to participate.

With each shoot I meet new SxS enthusiasts. At Prospect Hall I had conversed at length for the first time with Bill Murphy, Chuck Bishop, Fred Verry, and other PGCA members. There is nothing like a face to face conversation to get to know people...

Thanks,
Mark

Bill Murphy 01-05-2014 11:47 AM

Dave, lighten up a bit. If you held a shoot in Homer, the first year would be a little light too. When you say "West Virginia", most people think the end of the earth at the end of an eight mile dirt road. Prospect Hall is about an hour and a half from DC. Chuck and John ran one ad in the Shooting Sportsman, that's it. And it was right on top of the shoot. I talked to John this morning and told him that the shoot was being talked up on the double gun forums now. I will talk to Chuck later today and get Traci to update the dates on the two websites. OH, the two websites. wvagunshow.com and doublegun.net. Go to various parts of the website for phone contact etc. Don't use Chuck's email address. I hear he is a busy guy lately. Yes, he has a "jay oh bee".

Rich Anderson 01-05-2014 12:05 PM

This was a great shoot esp for it's first time. One dealer did pack up but he got hammered the night befor and dropped 5 figures (as in cash) at a local casino. Another big dealer had a family emergency which prevented him from coming, thats just life.

Nice venue, great people and very well run. I look forward to this years shoot.

Kenny if you decide to come bring a 410 and we can have a shoot:)

Harold Lee Pickens 01-05-2014 05:39 PM

There was more people there than I have fingers and toes. That's all the higher I can count cause I live in WV
Really, it was quite nice, and I imagine this year will be even better. I met Big Friend Ten, COB, Double Lab, and others and I'm still going back.

David Hamilton 01-05-2014 07:35 PM

It was the first year and it should develop into a great event. David

Bill Murphy 01-05-2014 08:03 PM

There are .410 events on the program, Kenny. Check the program.

Kenny Graft 01-07-2014 07:01 AM

Great...my little Parker repro will be hard to beat! ...(-: Its scary how well it kills clay targets out to 25-30 yards. I will look forward to it. SXS ohio...(-:

Bill Murphy 01-07-2014 08:25 AM

I don't know about your Repro, Kenny. I won the .410 event at the first Southern with my little Parker and I may bring it along. I'd like to see your Repro though.

Rich Anderson 01-07-2014 09:16 AM

I'll bring my Fox FE 410 and we will have ourselves a little contest.

Daryl Corona 01-07-2014 09:26 AM

I guess I'll have to locate a .410 by then so I don't feel left out.:crying:

Oh wait a minute, I've got a set of .410er's that will fit a 20ga. Will that count?

Rich Anderson 01-07-2014 09:32 AM

No that doesn't count you will need a real 410. You know you want one anyway.

Daryl Corona 01-07-2014 09:33 AM

:banghead:

Rich Anderson 01-07-2014 09:49 AM

If you can't secure one by the shoot I suppose I could share mine:whistle:

I am willing to help you find one of your very own though:)

Daryl Corona 01-07-2014 09:53 AM

You'll have to wait until I complete the sale of my house first.

Rich Anderson 01-07-2014 09:57 AM

Buy now pay later its the American Plan....call it the Affordable Gun Plan, put in your subsidy paperwork now and I'll start looking for you.

Kenny Graft 01-07-2014 11:59 AM

This will be a great time! I always enjoy our 410 shoots at the club. Double Lab....I still have the 410/28 DHE repro set that was listed in the for sale section and it will sell for less than half of a VH Parker 410 only gun. Its listed on gun broker for 12500.00 The asking price keeps going up of the Parker 410 guns, now 20-30K for a nice one in V grade........(-:

Bill Murphy 01-07-2014 01:06 PM

OK, go to the last Julia auction, search "parker" with realized prices, and tell me again how Parker .410s are going through the roof. If I had been there, I would be flush with .410s.

Kenny Graft 01-07-2014 05:30 PM

Bill....I don't get what your trying to say??? Did they sell hi or low???,,,did they have lots of them??....I would love to find a nice one at 15K or so....

Rich Anderson 01-07-2014 05:42 PM

I think what Bill is trying to say is that they went for less than expected. With the cost of a VH/VHE I went to a Fox by CSM and got a FE grade for much less than a Parker VHE.

Bill Murphy 01-08-2014 08:26 AM

Yup.

Bill Murphy 01-23-2014 11:52 AM

Today, Chuck has posted the dates for the shoot on the shoot website. doublegun.net

Kenny Graft 01-30-2014 06:56 AM

Could you post a link to that post....thanks Kenny

Rich Anderson 01-30-2014 09:09 AM

www.doublegun.net will get you there. I spoke to Chuck and they are going to change things up from last year esp the costs of shooting. I don't know if these changes have been made on the website yet.

Bill Murphy 01-30-2014 03:19 PM

He has made the date changes on the website, but as of today January 30, he has not made the changes in the program.

Harold Lee Pickens 01-30-2014 04:13 PM

Good to see all the interest in the Eastern SXS. It was the first sxs shoot I've attended and I had a good time. I met many of the Parker '"regulars" and look forward to seeing them again.

Bill Murphy 01-30-2014 06:31 PM

Yup, it's in West Virginia by gosh. Why would we not come, Harold? It is the most fun shoot I've been to.

Bill Murphy 02-08-2014 01:50 PM

As of today, February 8, 2014, the NEW, REDUCED, event prices have been posted on the Panhandle Shoot website. doublegun.net

Ed Blake 02-08-2014 05:36 PM

I will be there with son in tow. It would be nice if the $5 entry was waived. The targets are expensive enough as is.

Rich Anderson 02-08-2014 06:03 PM

It's a great course and a fun shoot but I don't see where the cost has been reduced much.

Harold Lee Pickens 02-08-2014 06:30 PM

Rich, doesn't look like it to me either, as I remember.

I would love to go but I agree with Rich, prices look a little steep compared to other shoots.

Bill Murphy 02-09-2014 09:32 AM

Ed, there was an "entry" fee last year too, but it was never implemented. It may be a ruse to keep out antis and other unwanted visitors to a private club. It was also advertised, last year, that a shuttle service and remote parking would be in effect. In fact, parking was not remote and a shuttle service was not used.

Bill Murphy 02-09-2014 09:54 AM

The promoters, my friends Chuck Brunner and John Allgood, have decided to go against the "side by side shoot" grain, and give cash payouts for good scores. I'm sure they took this step after some thought and feedback from those who find the "prizes" awarded at other Vintager type events to be tacky and less than rewarding. Maybe that was not the right choice, but it is what it is. Money in, money out, like any other competition in the country except side by side events. I look at it as a welcome change. Others' opinions may vary. For our information, the Main Event in 2013 was $110 for 85 birds. The 2014 Main Event is $85.00 for 75 birds. Money is paid back for first and second place in all events.

Bill, Chuck is a good friend of mine too, and I did not want anyone to think that this shoot was anything but a quality shoot and worth the price. But for me an average shooter I wish they had something setup for the guys that don't have a chance up against the top shooters, ie, Lewis class shoots, or lower priced side events, something like that, I shoot for fun and will never be able to be a AA shooter. Give something to the everyday shooter and maybe they would be a bigger turnout, which is what I would like to see for Chuck and John. It would be great if this shoot turned out to be larger then the other shoots.

Bill Murphy 02-09-2014 12:01 PM

Eric, you might make the same pitch to Bill Kempfler, Ray Poudret, and some others. Side by side shoots would be a non issue for me if it weren't for the vendors and the friends I see at the shoots. The shooting is off the scale at most events except the Northeast. See you in West Virginia.

Bill agree 100%, that's why Rich and a few other guys (me included.. hopefully more this year) will be shooting at Drake's Landing during part of the Southern and then visiting all the vendors and seeing old friends at the Southern and watching the challenge on Saturday afternoon. It looks to be a great time the end of April. Bill you have to join us at least one day at Drake's you'll have fun.:)

Fred Verry 02-09-2014 02:12 PM

Actually Bill, some people were charged an entry fee on Thursday and were required to park at the remote front gate location.
