Arkansas

Just got back from a duck hunt in Arkansas. Great time, as you can see. The first day I shot my NH 10 gauge Parker. 6 of us got 10 ducks, which was a mediocre hunt, but still lots of fun. The second day, we got 6 limits, including 3 speckle bellies all together at the end which capped out the limit and a great day of hunting.

Mills: nice hunt. I am headed to Arkansas in January. I am going with big creek bucks and ducks what outfitter did you use?
|
Our outfitter was just fine, but I would probably go back with a different one. Won't say the name for that reason. Our guide the second day was really good and the second day really made the trip. We had a great group which also made the trip really made it good as well

Nice looking gun Mills. I have sure shot a lot of game, but I have never been duck/waterfowl hunting. I am going to have to do that one day, but their has to be dogs involved. Love to watch dogs doing what they were bred to do.

We had dogs working both days. They did some pretty amazing retrieves of ducks that fell all the way across the rice field. The dog the first day had to break ice too. Different dog work from upland birds, but equally amazing, at least to me

Thanks Charlie. That 10 gauge is a great gun and has done well on ducks.

Where we went just lives and breathes duck hunting. Everyone you saw was doing something involving duck hunting. If you saw someone outside their house, they were either training their dog or hooking up their boat or something. You have to go to Mack's Prairie Wings which is basically a huge store devoted to duck hunting.

Nice pic's Mills, a couple of buddy and me are planning a timber hunt I never been yet but heard its a blast.
|
We did two rice field hunts which were beautiful, but hope to do a timber hunt there maybe next time.
|
Hunting in the green timber is interesting but there isn't much variety to it. Mallards and wood ducks, shooting anything else is rare. Give me rice, lots of variety out in the open.

That is how I feel. Also, the sun rise over the horizon.
We had almost all Mallards (one really beautiful Pintail) the first day, but the second day we had a wide variety, including 3 speckle bellies. I shot an LC Smith the second day. |

Never know when you might run into some wild piggies down there . My one and only trip to Arkansas was for wild piggies a couple years back . We were down in the southeastern corner on a friends 90,000 acre duck and deer property . |
got to love the 10:) nice pics

Check this out. This was the coffee table at our lodge. A great home decorating idea.

A friend has an old DuQuoin Illinois style duck boat that's been sitting outside for years. It's not sound enough to float but it's sound enough for something like this. Unfortunately it's also about 12 feet long, I ain't got that kind of space.

It was really functional. Basically, the size and length allowed them to get about 4 couches on 3 sides of it. We had a big group and could get a lot of us around it. Notice they put old decoys and hunting stuff in the boat which you can see through the glass. Dad has an old hunting boat that is in good enough shape to float, but is probably historic enough that it needs to be retired. Something like this would be perfect

Mills, Sounds like you were near Stugart, and yes Macks is the place for anything ducky, been there several times, Hunted Rice fields and flooded timber, and decoyed for snows but the rice field is the best I think. I used a Parker PH 10 ga steel barrel gun 32" Barrels to take a Pintail Drake that everybody else had given up on because of distance, Mark Ouellette is the care taker of that fine gun now! and I mean a fine gun! We were in St. Charles which is basically 40 minutes southeast of Stuttgart. Hunted rice fields the two days I was out. Need to do flooded timber sometime now. That PH 10 sure sounds like a fine gun!
