another project
i decided to take on another project, bid on two and ended up with both - don't ya hate it when that happens.
here is one of them. I was pleasantly surprised when this arrived - I figured a 0 grade with the U on the action, but it lists a dollar grade ($55) 10 gauge. There are many issues but its better than the first pics I saw. The specs match the letter. This one came from the end of the Oregon Trail - it left St Louis in 1879 - wish it could talk one replacement hammer - made with some bit of skill and care. the wood has issues above the locks, but the rest that is there is solid, I would really like to save it if I can. A solid keyed fore end the 30" barrels were the best surprise, I knew there was pitting - I almost said no based on the pictures, but they turned out to be in better shape than I thought, and plenty of wall thickness. Overall, wood and metal very dirty, but the dirt (including paint fingerprints) seems to have offered a bit of protective coating. Even the faintest hint of case color on the water table. Can't see any pattern in the plain twist tubes as it sits but hopefully a Frontier pad will bring some out. It won't be a quick one to bring back, hopefully it will be fun trying. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps3d4c3bd8.jpg http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps69d6cab9.jpg http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps865878eb.jpg http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...psf0a1bd3e.jpg http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...pscd9d26bd.jpg http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps920d4f03.jpg http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...psbfc369dc.jpg |

That gun doesn't look bad at all.

the metal should clean up fine. I will likely have the barrels refinished, I think it should make a fine shooter. |
Not too bad at all Rick. I have seen alot worse successfully brought back. I have two projects here awaiting winter already. Hopefully they will be ready for the spring.
|
Not all that bad rick. And that hand filed hammer is not all that bad on it.
Bring it on by sometime soon for me to check It out. |
will do Brian - after the other project gets here so you can opine on both.
the second one has been sitting in the UPS distribution center - just a few miles from me - according to the tracking - since 1:41 AM Thanksgiving day - that's a family holiday, everyone should enjoy it-- but who the heck gave UPS Friday off :banghead: |
I have a back action lifter that I think is waiting for me at the post office. I am looking forward to it, although my goal for 2014 is more modern (1900-1940) guns.

Rick, I'm looking forward to seeing your second project gun also! David |
I sure will. I plan on putting it under the tree, so will open on Christmas. It is early, has decarbonized steel barrels, so I will probably not shoot it. I also have a top action 0 grade 12 gauge that I do hope to shoot, it just needs a little TLC. I will get up pics of all

what a nice christmas present...charlie

Yeah, get a thread going on that back action.
I own back action number 1500. It is a neat gun. A low grade with decarbonized barrels. What is interesting is that I also own an earlier serial number, 1219 which is a front action grade two Damascus. A good example of the mixture of action styles by serial number of the very early guns. If I am not mistaken, mills also owns a front action almost identical to my 1219 that is only a few serial numbers off. I also recently acquired a T-Latch gun. Number 49. So my small collection of early Parker guns is doing relatively well. |
Brian can you post some pics of your T latch when you get some time.
|
I will post photos when Santa drops it off. Yes, it was cool that we have two front actions right together. My collection of early early Parkers grew this year too

I have had a bumper crop of early Parkers this year, to the point where one of my goals for the New Year is to get more "modern" ones (meaning after the composite steel era). I may also add to my Fox collection
