Pleased to present...

Parker #156168
1911 DHE 20 gauge, 32 inch barrels, 3 inch chambers.
One of perhaps a dozen guns ordered for the Hanford Duck Club which shares almost the identical longitude and latitude of the Wigeon Duck Club. This group of grade 3's predate the Wigeon guns by a year.
Might someone please check the serialization book and try to find a block of guns similar to 156168.
Thank you.

Very Nice !!

Rick Losey 07-17-2013 07:07 AM

great gun, love the setter

156168 is in the book, but there are lots of gaps in that range of serial numbers,

the next number down is 156141, next above it is 156188 then jumps to 156213. the next higher one with the same specs is 156526 (156266 is the same configuration but is an CHE)

a group of four with the same specs are listed as 155947 to 155950.

Long barrels and no safety in a duck blind? YIKES!

Chris Travinski 07-17-2013 09:06 AM

WOW!!! Long barrels, straight stock, no safety....that covers all the features I like to see!!

Brian Dudley 07-17-2013 10:21 AM

Very crisp engraving on that D grade. Great gun.

Bill Murphy 07-17-2013 10:34 AM

No safety on duck guns was a normal thing for some members of elite duck clubs where the members knew what end the shot comes out. Lots of no safety guns in the Edwin Hedderly collection if I remember correctly. Nash Buckingham shot no safety guns. Nash claims that he didn't load his gun until the ducks were in the air. I suspect the California clubs may have had a rule requiring that.

Bobby ,What a Great find ! the fourth picture shows some nice looking colors left on her ! The engraving is wonderful ! Beautiful Gun !!! Congrats !!!!!!!!!! Russ

I wonder how many people were shot with guns with no safety. Any stories? No way will I ever hunt near anyone with a gun like that. Just my two cents worth. I have looked down many barrels while hunting quail and doves in Georgia. Holy Smokes. A fellow here once droped a automatic with the safety off. It fired three times hitting him once in the side. He did survive but was hurt badly. Gerald.

dwight pugh 07-17-2013 11:31 AM

Great gun. !!! what does it weigh ?

three times

that really was an automatic, mechanically I would wonder that happened

No safety guns are the epitome of Parker, Smith, and Fox collector guns. I've even seen a no safety Model 21. The greatest evidence of no safety guns are pigeon guns of the pre ATA days.

Up to a point I can understand a no-safety compitition/target gun, but not on a field gun. As for these "club" guns, just being able to afford the price of admission does not guarantee being safe in a blind.

Bobby Cash 07-17-2013 03:35 PM

Any thoughts on the butt treatment?
Any recommendations on a replacement?

Thanks.

wayne goerres 07-17-2013 04:02 PM

nice ingraveing. I am surprised california dos'nt require a 3 shot plug in a double barrel.

Bobby Cash 07-17-2013 04:12 PM

Good one Wayne.:rotf:

Gun was owned by the sellers' fathers' father.
You could say it was Grandfathered in.

Bill Murphy 07-17-2013 04:23 PM

I would be leaving that old Silver alone, or sell it to me, the gun not the pad.

Crushed at the heel, hard as a rock and slick as ice.
I'd keep it with all other items of provenance but I'd really like to help out the back end. Silvers you say?
Thanks.

Craig Larter 07-17-2013 04:43 PM

I am with Bill leave it as is. A new pad will spoil a very classy gun just my opinion. I will take it as is and keep it as is. You asked:):)

Bobby Cash 07-17-2013 05:04 PM

Thank you Craig.
I respect and appreciate your input.
This pad however is really a mess. Crushed, cracked, gouged, misshapen. The worst facet on an otherwise handsome vintage Parker.
I'd never trash it, but must it really stay?

Craig Larter 07-17-2013 06:00 PM

I my opinion it's not a real mess it perfect it just fits the gun's overall character. I can't imagine a new pad will make it shoot better but that's just me. It's kinda like people putting vinyl siding a 18th century colonial home---- out of place in my opinion. Bottom line it's your gun and you can do as you desire----but you asked.

Todd Schrock 07-17-2013 07:01 PM

What a wonderful gun!

Replace the pad, hammer the ducks with it and don't look back!!

Ed Blake 07-17-2013 09:04 PM

Keep the old pad but put a new one on if you want. A new soft pad may help protect the wood butt better than an old hard one. That is one great gun. +1 no safety. What's the frame size and overall weight?

Gerald McPherson 07-18-2013 08:51 AM

I had a Elsie that had a three position safety. In the rear position it was not automatic. I never was at ease shooting it and did not let my grandson hunt with it at all. I was very careful to explain it to a friend who bought it. It was a very nice gun but the Parker Quality just was not there.

greg conomos 07-18-2013 09:06 AM

There was a lady here, she went hunting with her husband and somehow the gun gun accidentally went off and shot him 4 times. Then her camp shovel accidentally went off and dug a pretty deep hole. Then, the guy was so surprised by it all he rolled into the hole and all the dirt fell in on top of him. She was so shocked that went home and forgot to tell anyone about it for over 15 years.

Steve Cambria 07-18-2013 09:51 AM

In the words of Horace Greeley, "...only one thing endures and that is character."
That pad spells Character with a capital "C." I wouldn't touch a thing. What a find. Beautiful gun!!

Bill Murphy 07-18-2013 10:50 AM

I have a couple of favorite Parker singles with new Griffin and Howe repro Silver pads that I replaced years ago. Some day I will take the time to reinstall the original D-W and Silver pads on them. My AHE Trap also has a G&H Silver repro, has since 1986. I had a couple of spacers put under the pad because "A trap gun just had to be 14 1/2" long". That original Hawkins pad will be a bit harder to reinstall. I displayed this gun at the Eastern Panhandle shoot, along with some others on the PGCA tables. From now on, I leave them alone.

Bobby Cash 07-18-2013 11:15 AM

I see said the blind man.

Any thoughts on grunge eradication??
In the spirit of "do no harm", can a century of accumulated
dirt and grime be gently removed??
Thank you.

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...psab6e844a.jpg

Bill Murphy 07-18-2013 12:18 PM

Most posters ask how to age a newly installed repro Silver pad to get the grunge back. 409 should work to get your grunge removed.

Pat Dugan 07-18-2013 02:46 PM

The pad looks great like it is , some here use goose blood and other exotic things to get a pad to look like yours.

Bill Zachow 07-18-2013 05:16 PM

Were the gun mine, I would have the pad replaced with an original Silvers (they are available) have the floorplate screws repaired and timed, a possibly, have the bolt locking lip replaced to move the lever further to the right. I consider these moves/repairs to be maintenance, not a restoration. A gun of this quality and scarcity deserves to look like a well maintained piece. Needless to say, the work should be done by one of our recognized Parker smiths.

Bobby, with all the detailed advice, you don't need any from me.

Here's my old D 20/32 with its old Hy Gun pad:

Bobby Cash 07-18-2013 08:45 PM

To hell with your gun...nice pad!! :envy:
Now that pad has character, mine looks diseased.
Originality counts but I don't see any benefit to 100 year old schmootz.

I used orange based cleaner on an old Fox pad years ago. Did a great job with only 1 application. Cleaned it up and the rubber seemed rejuvinated.

I like how when looking down these long barrels there's a horizon and you can see the curvature of the earth.
