I have posted pictures of my CH before but got looking at my letter and decided to do a little research on G. H. Pumpelly using Bill's previously recommended web site la84. It seems Mr. Pumpelly was a armature trap shooter from western NY.
New York Shooters" Have a Fine Day at the Traps. Skaneateles Junction, N. Y., May 15. The tournament of the Glenside Gun Club was a success although the rainy weather in the morning prevented a larger attendance. H. W. Smith and C. S. Cottle, both mem bers of the club, tied for first place. G. H. Pumpelly, of Oswego, was second; C. L. Frantz, of Seneca Falls, and B. G. Wheeler, or Martinİs, third. In event 6, merchandise, Mr. Cottle won the Ithaca gun; Mr. Wilcox, of Rome, the hunting coat, and Mr. Stevens, of Syracuse, the jacket. Mr. J. A. K. Elliott, the Winchester expert, was jsent just nicely convalescent from an s, and the weather was so bad that he o t attempt to shoot. Mr. Briggs, of the "V. -uchester Re peating Arms Co., was present. He has many friends in this locality. Scores: Events .... 1 2 3 45 6 7 8 9 10 Targets ... 15 20 15 20 15 20 15 20 15 20 Sh. Bk. G. that is a nice little bit of history to go with a great gun
what was the date of that shoot - be nice to know if he used that one |
That is a interesting letter. The owner was very specific in what he wanted. Was the saftey missing when you got it?
Thanks Rick, the year was 1908 and that would be my guess. He is listed in Sporting Life 4 different times up to 1913.
Try doing A google search under the book category for G.H. Pumply. I was was able to find quite a bit of info on the shooter who owned my gun this way...

Bob; Thanks for posting the information and pictures of your CH. I live in western NY and all the locations mentioned are near and dear to me. Amazing! Thanks
Looks like he made a good showing.
What an awesome gun. Congrats.
Your guy sure ran in some fast company.

Robert, the "gibberish" you are seeing in the la84 search is a result of using the "text version" which is a computer translation of what is in the real version. Rather than using the text version, click on the heading of the selection and you will get a copy of the real page. Use the text version to locate your search words on the page, then go back and click on the real page and you will not get the "gibberish".
Bill?..... Is that really you?.... You're pretty computer savvy...
So how come you can't post pictures of your wonderful guns? |
Thanks Bill, when I'm viewing it looks like a photo of the actual page...when I copied and pasted it came out in gibberish.

Robert,
Your posting caught my interest as I am distantly related to Gurdon H. Pumpelly, and I am pleased that his fine CH is now in appreciative hands. The Pumpellys were a very prominent family in 19th- early 20th century Owego (not Oswego), Tioga Co., NY. I remember visiting the Pumpelly house in the mid-50s and being absolutely amazed at the huge collection of hunting trophies in the main hall....stuffed bears, mounted moose, etc. I believe that Gurdon took these animals while hunting in Canada and Alaska. I also remember the gun cabinet, but was only allowed to look. Unfortunately, the collection and house contents were sold off in the late 70s, after the death of his son Spencer. Perhaps this is when your CH left the Pumpelly family. The Pumpelly house is now occupied by a high-end bed-and-breakfast establishment. I may have more Pumpelly info in my files - please PM me if you have some interest. Regards, Bill Palmer |
Thanks Bill great info, did not know Mr. Pumpelly's first name and assumed it was a typo... Owego.
More pictures please, NICE
Robert,
Nice gun, that's the one that passed through Robbin Hollow Outfitters a while back? I have a gun with a similar PGCA letter ordered by Gil Wheeler who is also on the score page you printed out. He was a sales rep. for the Peter's Cartridge Co. Neat. |

A couple more pics. one of the other interesting features is the knurled hinged trigger.
Yes Chris it is. |
Bob will that come to Hausmanns with you? I have 8lbs of 700X I'll trade:rotf:
Rich - If that doesn't work out, I'll buy the 700X.
John if your going north Jay's in Clare had several 8lb cans.
Thx. Clare isn't on my route up north, but I have friends who go to Baldwin who might be able to pick one up.
I can get one for you as I go that way often. If you wish I can stop the next time I'm through there. How I can get it to you might be hard. You could try the Gaylord store also.
8 pounders are illegal where I live, at least where I live today.
Rich - Let's not turn this sandwich into a banquet. I'm in Gaylord frequently, so I'll check the Jay's there.
Thanks |

Thats a dance to inviting to pass up. What do I do if she really likes me:eek:
The likelihood of that is pretty slim.
