Identifying the 20 gauge hammer guns

How many members have a 20gauge hammer gun, I am trying to put together a list of the known 20 ga Hammer guns about 50 in all I think , that counts dollar grade and graded guns, lifter and top lever, If you do not want to show the serial number, just say if it is a lifter or top lever the following is what have been identified as being found. Gary
1- 17448
2- 10165
3- 15936
4- 60291
5- 45852
6- 4634
7- 15838
8- 161467
9-6999
10- 171718

Paul D Narlesky 01-18-2019 11:21 PM

Here's one for you 46925

A pretty rough gun but it is complete. I will probably get .410 inserts and be able to hunt with it.
It does have character ! Best,Paul
Oh wanted to add frame has beautiful lightening cuts milled in it. 0 frame

Smallest 20s were 00 framed lifters

start with post #25 for 20ga. discussion

At the time these early twenty-gauge lifters were produced, the “00-frame” had not been identified as one of the frame sizes although the firing spacing we associate with the 00-frame size was being approximated on these tiny guns.

Interesting that in 2010 Austin had a little twenty gauge that I was thinking about purchasing from him and we corresponded several times on said gun #17448 I am sure it is alright to use the ser# since it was sent to me along with the Parker letter. The interesting thing was the letter he sent me describing the gun he said " The gun is one of two so far found with the little 00 exposed hammer frame, 29/32 firing pin spacing on center" and is the latest s/n so far found with the cross slide for end attachment. A lot of info's surfaced since then on twenty ga hammer guns. I miss the conversation with Mr Hogan he was a true gentleman, Gary

Dean you are right about the spacing, on another note I wonder if these little guns were made with women folk in mind, Parker made so few of them over a period of about 40 years approximately 15 lifters and 35 or so top lever guns. The 0 grade guns are rare in good condition shootable I mean, Gary

Not sure about that Gary - maybe youngsters or even adult bunny hunters... The one Austin had he called a "rabbit gun" because of the more than four inches of drop on a straight-grip stock. I held that one and was amazed anyone would actually want to shoot it at anything.... but the game had better be on the ground!

Is it still in your collection Gary?

This thread would be a lot cooler if there were pictures. ;-)

Dean Romig 01-19-2019 03:00 PM

I think I can add a few pictures of the rabbit gun of Austin's that I believe was featured in Parker Pages. Don't have time right now as I'm trying to finish the Spring Issue of Parker Pages.

I gotta get a third job.....

Gary Carmichael Sr 01-26-2019 06:24 PM

You probably will not believe this but I traded a grade 6 10 gauge for the little 0 grade 20, could not find one in decent shape till this one, sometimes money does not have to change hands, have done several trades over the years, Just so you know the letter said the little 0 grade was sent back to have a set of Vulcan 28 ga barrels fitted to the gun so there you have it Parker made a 28 ga Vulcan barreled hammer gun, Gary

Dean H Hanson 02-11-2019 08:34 PM

16348. Trust me, pictures will make you sad. Parker and the crew at Bachelder's will be up for this incredible challenge I trust. Appears to be 00 frame equivalent , lightening cuts, missing 4" of barrels, rest is there. I'm all in. Quick thanks to Opening Day, true mentor and inspiration. I hope you shoot MY hammer 20, in few years. My favorite part so far, the short arm release lever on the forearm. I'll keep ya posted.... in 2021 :)
