Sight unseen, a friend was at a flea market today and sent these pics from his cell phone. I asked him to buy it for me, sight unseen except for the poor pictures.

I cant wait to learn the serial number and especially to hold it in hand...

Man those pictures are terrible... I guess that's the best I can expect from a cell phone.

It looks like it has some color, thigger guard still has some blueing and the wood looks very good with not too much wear to the checkering. Now, if the barrels are right I'll feel much better.

IF the barrels are right it will make a fine turkey gun!!

Great find. I agree with you. I am not much of one for the ten bore, but there are some nice ones out there.
Do not worry if the barrels are an issue. Just give me a call.

scott kittredge 07-14-2012 03:17 PM

you never know when a gun will show up , hope it works out for ya, it looks good from i can see, keep us posted :corn:

Mark Landskov 07-14-2012 03:59 PM

Dean, try some of Mr. Bell's one ounce loads and you will become a disciple! I have owned only two 10 bore shotguns, but they both threw some awesome patterns at ranges exceeding 40 yards. Sometimes Mr. Grouse has the advantage of seeing you long before you can sneak up on him, and that is where the Mighty Ten comes into play! Enjoy!

calvin humburg 07-14-2012 04:01 PM

Wow Dean, scuplterd Bolsters grade 3? Has what as you state good color on floor one would think the side plates would be good did he say if there was engraving on side plates. I'm excited for you pictures as soon as it showes up. If barrels are border line theres always light black powder loads. Did your friend see what size frame it has?

George M. Purtill 07-14-2012 04:04 PM

oh come on

thats a great flea market find!!
I expect pictures tonight!

Mark Ouellette 07-14-2012 04:47 PM

charlie cleveland 07-14-2012 07:07 PM

mighty nice find...i bet the 10 will soon be higher on your list before long...its my favorite... charlie

Rick Losey 07-14-2012 07:46 PM

great, I am still amazed where these finds occur.

Dean Romig 07-15-2012 10:38 PM

My friend knows exactly nothing about shotguns - or any kind of guns for that matter - so what questions I want to ask him about it will not be asked. My questions will be answered later this week when I have it in hand. I promise I'll post pictures. The barrels are 30" just as the book reports them to be.

Larry Stauch 07-15-2012 10:46 PM

You're a lucky guy today Mr.Roming.

Congrats.

edgarspencer 07-16-2012 06:20 AM

I was told there was an "Engraved Parker Shotgun with Outside Hammers" being shopped around Brimfield, last week for $1500. Was this it?

Dean Romig 07-16-2012 07:31 AM

Not by the price I paid. Maybe somebody else bought it and flipped it right away... who knows???
I don't even know where my friend found it.

charlie cleveland 07-16-2012 10:05 AM

now were in suspence over this new gun...charlie

Pete Lester 07-16-2012 10:28 AM

I hope it works out for you Dean. If it does your next adventure will be reloading and you will enjoy the performance of the 10 and economy and flexibility of reloading for it.

I received the gun this afternoon and I like it a lot. The only problem I find (other than the buggered hammer screws and the missing screw on the side of the SKBP) is the fact that someone had used the wrong method to clean the crud from the metal surfaces and succeeded in polishing the finish off the Damascus barrels and any remaining case color from the entire frame. It also appears that he cleaned the wood a bit and oiled the wood nicely without overdoing it.
It is a 1875 gun, Grade 3, Skeleton Steel Butt Plate, 2-Frame (1 1/8" between firing pins), 14 LOP, 2 3/4" DAH, 2" DAC, 30 3/16" barrels (book says 30") checkering in very nice condition, locks up tight and solid (no wiggle even with forend off) Chokes haven't been touched, a few rusty patches in the bores but no pitting.... and it fits me very nicely.

Pics.

I wonder how many years it sat in a closet or an attic before someone decided they didn't want a "gun" in the house! Nice gun.

George Lander 07-16-2012 11:35 PM

You just never know what will show up at a flea market, estate sale or even a yard sale. You've got a keeper there Dean. Congrats!

George

Rick Losey 07-16-2012 11:44 PM

I guess most everything has been said but ooohhh and aahhh

Very nice find Dean, the gun and the friend are keepers

Now will Morris sell you some RST 10's. Or will he think you're kidding?

Dean Romig 07-17-2012 05:32 AM

Morris will sell me the shells but he'll do it in his signature way of just looking at you with his short cigar butt pointing right at ya and not say a word, but that little twinkle in his eye lets you know that he still loves ya.

Mark Ouellette 07-17-2012 06:43 AM

Dean,

That is one heck of a nice 10 gauge Grade 3 and it's on a #2 Frame!!!

I hate you! :( Just kidding!

Mark

George M. Purtill 07-17-2012 06:52 AM

grade 3

You done good Dean. i just love the ball grip.

Dave Suponski 07-17-2012 07:06 AM

Wonderful gun Dean! I can see those Pa'tridge shakin in their boots now...:)

Dean Romig 07-17-2012 07:31 AM

It is such a lively gun I told Dave I thought it was about 8 lbs. but I weighed it this morning and it is 9 lbs. exactly.

Daryl Corona 07-17-2012 07:45 AM

Ya see Dean, you just never know where that next Parker is coming from. Nice one! I've been kinda halfheartedly looking for a 10 to hunt waterfowl down here in the Chesapeake Bay country with but now after seeing your new find, well, if YOU are going to hunt with a 10 then I guess I should really get one. Next year we'll have a really big bore squad at Ernie's. Congrats.

Frank Cronin 07-17-2012 07:46 AM

Congrats Dean! Look forward to seeing your "new" 10 gauge it real soon!

Russ Jackson 07-17-2012 08:12 AM

Dean ,I am getting in on this a little late but as so many have said OOLALA ! Nice Gun !! The Checking on the Ball Grip and Forend are beautiful , Congrats ,Very Nice ! Russ

Pete Lester 07-17-2012 08:13 AM

Nice find Dean!

Dean I don't believe you or anyone else will use a Short Ten enough to appreciate it's capabilities unless you reload for it.

RST Shells are wonderful, they provide options where none exist and Morris is a nice guy, but the retail price of $40 for 25 1 1/8 ounce 2 7/8" 10ga shells will lead to very limited shooting for most people. In contrast I have been able to reload a box of 25 1 1/8 ounce 10ga target loads for about $7 a box of 25. My cost include the purchase of hulls.

It does not take very many boxes of shells to ammortize the cost of MEC loader and short kit.

But there are other choices for turkey shooters.

Yes there are, a few 1 1/4 ounce loads, and with so few shots taken at Turkeys cost is not an issue, However I don't see any 1 3/8, 1 1/2, 1 5/8 or even 1 3/4 ounce loads on there. If you check the 10ga reloading data you will see larger payloads with moderate pressures.

If you want to shoot it a lot and have a wide range of payload/pressure options you have to reload for the Short Ten.

Mark Ouellette 07-17-2012 11:28 AM

Dean,

Based on the serial number of your new gun it is likely to have 2 & 5/8" chambers.

Also, the chambers may have been cut for brass shells.

Mark

John Truitt 07-17-2012 12:11 PM

Dean,

does your have the recessed breech face for the shells?

No, it has flat breech faces with no recesses.

Interestingly, I know of a Parker with the gas-releif porting on the breech faces that was patented by Boss. I'll post a pic of that tonight.

Dave Suponski 07-17-2012 01:00 PM

Daryl, If we are gonna have a big bore shoot at Ernies you better buy two so I will have one to shoot. I sold all my 10"s Oh wait....BFT Mark has a whole pile of 'em.....

Mark Ouellette 07-17-2012 01:04 PM

Seventeen Parker 10 gauges at last count. Add four LC Smiths, and a couple Lefevers and I suppose I do have a few...

I have no AH Fox 10 gauges because due to Ansley's late arrival with his last gun company. The 10 gauge was fading from the marshes and fields when the AH Fox Gun Company produced their A, B, and C grades. I do however have a couple Super Fox HE guns in 12 gauge magnum. I shot one of those at Hausmann's in June on the small bore course. Life is nothing without a challange!

Mark

Craig Larter 07-17-2012 01:05 PM

Dean: Very nice!! Welcome to the 10 bore club, they are fun to shoot.
