North Central Kansas Hunting
 

Pheasant and quail hunting this week across north central Kansas. Charlie Herzog, Rich Flanders, Cal Humberg and Bruce Day. Parkers only, ranging from a couple Trojans, V's, G's, D's, C's and A's. Very nice Parkers and interesting and unusual engraving.

Very dry this summer and hard to find birds.

Went in and looked at a few old sports cars stored in a small town.

Bigest pheasant was 30 bars, 1" spurs, a second or maybe a third year bird. All wild of course.

Some day I'll hunt pheasants again. It's on my "bucket list". I hunted pheasants from when I was twelve in 1960 to when I was twenty-two.... and then they were gone.

Thanks Bruce, it looks like a great time. I don't think there is a better way to spend an afternoon than walking through a field with Parkers, dogs and friends.

While we had terrible heat and drought conditions this summer, and we need rain starting now , I am convinced that a major reason for fewer pheasant and quail is a significant growth in the predator population. Coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, opposums, hawks, foxes, all are after the birds. Few farm kids trap anymore, there is no market for the pelts with the anti-fur drum beating. I blasted a coyote a couple days ago and don't hestitate to pull the trigger. In Kansas we still have greyhound coursing in which people drive the back roads with 2-3 greyhounds and a sight dog looking for coyotes and foxes. Problem is we don't have enough of those folks now. In a tough year like this anyway with the drought, then we have all the predators looking for the remaining birds, its doubly tough. If any of you are predator hunters, you have my thanks.

Bruce standing rule on my property is; if you see a coyote, coon, Cat or porky Shoot it ! I don't care what season it is.

Dean, you might consider greyhound coursing there in Mass. Those big greyhounds stand waist high and are all legs, chest and teeth and will tear up a coyote in a hurry. I imagine most people back there have never seen anything like it. It would be a real treat for them and might even make the local papers.

A few more pics of our hunt. We got those 5 roosters in 5 very busy minutes... The one thing we didn't get a picture of was the quail, yes a quail that Bruce made a nice clean neck shot on.... with a 26" C-grade damascus 10ga! Of course he claimed that he was aiming for the head so wasn't one bit surprised.

Don't forget it was a Bob because "We don't shoot hens":). It was a enjoyable to hunt with these great guys and Bruce's and Charlie's great dogs. I got to handle some great guns. Thanks B C R.

Those are some nice pictures guys.

Some uneducated folks around here actually put food scraps out to feed the coyotes, coons, opossums, etc. because they "get to see wildlife" this way but when their little doggies and kittys go missing they can't believe the coyotes would do such a thing. Yup, it's a strange world we live in back here in the urban East.
