Nice shooting Harry.:bowdown::bowdown:

Thanks you all, but don’t give him a big head!

Southern Purchase

Did anybody pick up any good guns at the Southern? There were many to choose from but a beautiful late Parker GHE 20ga.(241xxx) caught my eye as I was looking at Josh Lowensteiners tables. Auctually two other gentlemen were holding and looking at the gun when I got to his table. I was hoping they would put it down so I could get a better look. After they laid the gun down-I picked it up and couldn't believe the minty condition and beautiful figured wood of the gun. I knew I had to have it. A dealer that everybody knows got within a few hundred dollars of buying this gun and I knew I had better jump on it as it was not going to be on the table much longer. I made a deal with Josh and now own the gun. Josh also had some other great guns for sale as well. I have heard that he was the go to guy when your looking for high condition Parkers. I will make it a point to get to his table right off the bat next year.

Reggie Bishop 04-25-2021 11:09 AM

Sounds like you got a nice one John! Was it a beaver tail double trigger gun with a dog head butt plate? I think I know the gun.

Jay Oliver 04-25-2021 11:18 AM

I would definitely like to participate in the Parker/LC Smith Challenge event next year. I don't why I haven't yet, I guess I just didn't know the drill.

Josh had many nice Parkers and guns from other makers too. His was my favorite booth. Everything was just high quality.

Down at the first tent by the entrance, I found a 1903 30" 20 Gauge VH with a straight stock I just had to have. It was so nice to be back at the Southern after a 6 year break and I am already looking forward to next year :)

Dean Romig 04-25-2021 12:53 PM

The guns Josh offers fit all categories from the extremely high condition guns to the rare and unique collector pieces and even the one-of-a-kinds. Josh has been in it since he was a boy learning from some of the greats in our field of gun collecting, the first and most enduring of whom is his own Dad, Howard. Today he represents what we have been missing these last 15 years or so with the passing of some the greatest dealers we have known. He very very easily fills the vacancy they have left.

It has a splinter forend-double triggers and dogs head buttplate. If Im not mistaken-I think he had 2 GHE 20ga Parkers. The other gun was also nice from what I remember.

Hmmmm , you got it from the older gentleman beside John Allgood I think . I’d perused that for a bit thursday . But I was more intrested in one of the pair of VHE 20 gauge 32 inchers the dealer from FL had . Thought I’d wait until Saturday and make an offer . But Doc Lehew got the pair and you I think bought the 30” probably after we talked . I did however end up with an SC 32” and a DHE 20 30” both from PGCA members .

Congrats to LC Smith on Hammer Gun Win!

Team LC Smith won the Hammer Gun Challenge by a 139 to 138 squeaker. Good job to them as it was hard won with great shooting. Mal MacGregor was top shooter in the Hammer Gun Challenge after a shoot off with Britton Condon from Team LC Smith. Both were tied at 29 out of 30!

It was a great time and a return to the “old normal” we have missed so much this past year.

Harold Lee Pickens 04-25-2021 05:33 PM

Ok, you told us about these nice guns that you bought--now it's picture time!!

Here are 2 quick pics of mine a 20 gauge 30" VH choked full/full. The wood was refinished on this, but I love the grain/figure for a VH. LOP is 14 3/8" and it fit me perfectly. I had a chance to shoot it yesterday and it is a keeper...

Harold Lee Pickens 04-25-2021 07:25 PM

Just broke one of the Ten Commandments--you know the one about coveting your neighbors possessions.
Love it, what does it weigh?

Dean Romig 04-25-2021 07:32 PM

Nice find Jay!!!

.

Jay Oliver 04-25-2021 07:41 PM

Thanks Harold and Dean! It weighs 6 pounds 3.5 ounces

I'm gonna have to return this one. Someone removed material on the water table. I suppose to reduce the weight. What a shame. Can't believe I didn't catch that before I bought it, dang the luck. :rotf:

This one was on display in the break room during after hours show and tell. Whew, what a hammer gun. Strong Du Bray roots on this one.

CraigThompson 04-25-2021 08:36 PM

Think I met ten or twelve folks I’ve talked with here but obviously never met in person . I know it sounds like a broken record but it’s kinda nice to put an actual in person face with a name !

Looks like I'm not the only one that caved and bought something I hadn't planned on

Chuck Bishop 04-26-2021 10:47 AM

Saw some awesome guns!

Me too Craig! Picked up a sexy Lefever 32" Damascus 12g straight stock live bird gun.

It was a great week shooting, seeing old friends and meeting new friends that I've only conversed with here on the forum or in PMs.

The three in the picture below didn’t make the initial trip south with me , however I’d already purchased the big one on the top and had Breck to some work on it then picked it up in Sanford rather then trusting a carrier . Those three however will make the trip to the “Koneski Extravaganza” in July

Craig what is that one in the middle? 30" DHE 20?

I would venture that you do know. The owner had graciously agreed to let me shoot it in the Parker/LCS Challenge. There was one requirement, no rain. Unfortunately it rained.

Mills Morrison 04-26-2021 02:47 PM

Harry came within one bird of me in the hammer gun challenge. 18 to 19. Proud, if nervous

Brett Hoop 04-26-2021 04:20 PM

Well Mills your sons safe gun handling and impressive shooting were one of the highlights for me. Mom being there in full support just made it all that much better. My hat is off to both of you as parents.

Mills Morrison 04-26-2021 04:41 PM

Thank you Brett! It was great to see you too. Thanks also for the advice on Africa. It really helped!

Brian Dudley 04-26-2021 04:41 PM

It was great to see all of those that I did. New faces and old.
Any that I happened to miss, to next time.

Yes sir you are 100% correct !

I had about gotten out of there without any larger ticket items and the person I bought that from wanted me to try it on the 5 stand practice field . First time I shot it I dropped 2 targets I think so it followed me home :rotf:

Now I've got DH grades in the 10 , 12 and 20 . And what seems to be missing there ??? An DH or DHE 16 perhaps

Mills Morrison 04-26-2021 07:02 PM

Yeah, you need a 16

Bill Murphy 04-27-2021 06:26 AM

And an eight.

James Brown 04-27-2021 08:25 AM

and a 28 and a .410

Mills Morrison 04-27-2021 01:55 PM

Harry shot 27 out of 50 in the qualifying round with his Parker hammer gun and 42 out of 100 a week earlier in sporting clays (same thing as 5 stand basically) with his Beretta automatic. Do the math. What was that they said about sxs's being inferior to modern guns?

I’d need big financial backing for those two as well as an 8 so all three in a DH/E are pretty much off the table :rotf:

Joe Graziano 04-29-2021 09:35 PM

It was great seeing everyone at the Southern. Just a fantastic time all around. Congratulations to Mike Koneski for one heck of a four day tally on the courses, including winning the Ripon Cup. Incredible shooting.

MattHaney 04-30-2021 10:11 AM

Good to meet you there Joe. Enjoyed talking with you!

Joe Graziano 04-30-2021 12:11 PM

Same here, Matt! Hope to see you in the fall.

Bob Jurewicz 05-01-2021 07:39 AM
