The "hype" really started during the Great Depression to try and garner some sales of new guns.

Thanks Dave. I had understood it started sooner, like shortly after smokeless and nitro powders became popular and folks weren’t heeding the warnings NOT to load to the same recipes they had always loaded black powder to… and burst their gun barrels.
