Thanks DH. Here's one that probably should be in "other fine doubles (5 shot)" or maybe "off topic". How about some of the old guy in his Harry Truman; I know they're out there.

Destry - Need more information on the squirrel hunting hat. Railroad engineer or USMC?

Destry L. Hoffard 08-09-2011 01:25 PM

John,

That would be a BIGSCO hat actually, meaning Bought in Gas Station Corruna Ontario. They had a pile of them, I should have bought half a dozen. It's become my favorite warm weather shooting cap and it's getting pretty rough looking.

Fred,

That's the famous Harry Truman hat in the Parker / LC Smith challenge photo. It's the only one I could find of him in it oddly enough, though I know there must be more.

That photo of all of us with our humpbacks cracks me up. There's you and Roger with every hair you ever had and both my senior by several years. Then there's me, bald as a hickory nut. You boys certainly must have some secret nobody ever told me about.

We were driving to the Southern a couple of years back and you and Roger were in a car next to us. We stopped for lunch and a bit latter we stopped in the middle of the x-way for cheese and crackers. Dave and I got tired and crossed over the medium to get off and stayed the night in a motel. Still have the marks on my door from a plastic traffic barrel that I didn't see. Hope he gets well soon. Paul,

If you'll read the thread you'll find that Roger has passed away and his memorial service is this Saturday.

Thanks to Destry I spoke to Roger shortly before he went into hospice. I can say that he was still a lovable curmudgeon. I hope to be as gracious under the circumstances.

Roger was one of a couple of you guys that left a lasting impression on my son Corey who came with to the first couple "Southerns". From the moment he met him Roger made Corey feel like he was welcome and equal among the men there. It was that way at the 5 stand and also at cocktail time and dinner. I have an image etched in my mind of Roger lookiing Corey right in the eye wearing that "give them hell" Harry Truman hat.....I think those weekends had an impact on Corey that lasts to this day.

Roger will live on in our memories and in some others that will outlive all of us.

Roger and I only spoke a few times in the last couple of years but I do miss him.

All the best,

Jeff Mulliken

Good to hear from you Jeff.

There are a scant few men who made a difference in our lives when we were boys.

It appears that Roger was one of those for Corey.

Destry L. Hoffard 08-15-2011 03:51 PM

Roger's service was a honor to the man, a full house at the church and lots of friends (including myself) getting up and telling tales.
