I was gifted an A5 20ga by my father in law who was gifted it by his father in law (my Pretty Wife's Grandfather.) He got it in a poker game in the 60's. He was a liquor salesman on the Chicago South side during that time. It was a high stakes game and his opponent had run out of money and thought very highly of his full house kings over sixes in 5 card draw and put the A5 on the table. My Pretty Wife's Grandfather laid down four 9's and the gun was his.

As to rate of fire and handling of the 20, I once hit a single dove three times in a row until the last shot threw said bird over a tree. Tough to do that with a Parker.

Rereading this thread last week rekindled my passion for the humpbacks! Took my A-5 twenty out for a round of SC on Sunday and got lots of comments like, 'OMG, a REAL Browning!". and "Can you still get parts for them?". I said "Yeah, kind of like finding parts for an M-1!" Used my MOD barrel; next time I'll go for SK and have some real fun!

Nice little Auto-5 20 gauge

This just popped up on GI. Great little bird gun with a 26" vent rib IC choked barrel from 1965.

Looks like a decent price too! I have seen people asking $750 t0 $1000 dollars for 20 gauge imp-cyl barrels alone. Also: Larry- Is it safe to put a magnum barrel on these early A-5 20 gauges? Another quick question- Do the 1960-65 superposed 28 gauges and 410's all use the 20 gauge frames?

20 Auto-5

Unfortunately, a 20 gauge magnum shell will not cycle through that action. So if you wanted a single shot, you could put a 20 mag barrel on there and drop one in the chamber, but it won’t eject. And yes, the 20, 28, 410 Superposed are all on the same frame.

Thanks for the information!

He traded the Browning for a Remington 878 with a 28" modified choke and promptly had the barrel shortened. He never bought another shotgun. I never saw him miss a bird. That 878 rests in my gun safe, and will until I am gone. Unfortunately, there is no one else in the family that appreciates firearms that I can leave it to.

My Dad was given a New York made Knickerbocher 20 by his dad when my Dad was 10 (in 1931). It was the only gun he ever owned. I never saw him miss even one shot with that little gun. He did borrow his dad's Remy Model 11, 12 from time to time. I eventually inherited that gun.

Earlier this year I found a very high condition A5 Sweet Sixteen that was delivered to the Browning warehouse in 1949.
I have only shot some pen raised Chucker’s with it but I really like how it handles and now know why it’s called a Sweet Sixteen.
Shortly after I purchased it I ordered this book. For About $90 it’s well worth the money.
