A few people will be there Tuesday.

Garry L Gordon 03-03-2021 06:38 PM

So, the annual meeting will be in June and not held in conjunction with the Southern, yes?

I’ll be down Tuesday at some point . Have you guys got room for one more at Drakes ?

CraigThompson 03-03-2021 07:02 PM

Is there going to be ANY separate 8 gauge event at Deep River ? I see nothing for the course , is it possible there’ll be some sort of 8 gauge challenge event ?

A few years ago there was an 8 Bore event with loaner guns. Hasn’t been any 8 bore event there since.

Correct. It will be during Ernie Hausmann’s shoot in June.

Well I might just bring one anyway seems like I’ll have close to a dozen guns as it is so one more won’t hurt :rotf:

I shot one of my EH’s in the qualifying round a few years ago. It was a blast

Which day do you anticipate arriving ?

Randy G Roberts 03-04-2021 08:45 AM

RST Update

Kris from RST was kind enough to call yesterday and bring me up to speed on their present status with production and plans for the Southern so that I may inform the PGCA members. As you might expect they are having a difficult time with components, plenty of hulls but limited goods to put into them. When they do receive a shipment it is rarely the amount ordered nor adequate to meet their demands. They are being inundated with orders and probably could not keep up if they had the components. Interesting to note that part of the issue is that their shells are being ordered by anyone and everyone who has a need for shot shells and not just the vintage gunners. As we all know ammo is hard to find and with the help of Google folks are buying it wherever they can find it.

In terms of the Southern their attendance is an uncertainty as of right now and may remain so until the last minute. Obviously if they have no product or not an adequate amount they will not be there. On the other hand if components should show up Kris has made it clear that they will do everything they can to get something put together and make the trip. For those of you planning on filling your RST order, stocking up, or just buying RST ammo at the Southern you may have an issue. Wish I had better or more definitive news but the situation is what it is. I will put this on my calendar and touch base with Kris again in 30 days or so and report back. In the meantime place your order and you may get lucky, some folks have.

Probably 9-10ish? I can let you know Tuesday evening.

CraigThompson 03-08-2021 02:32 PM

Whats the usual amount of shells needed for all "The Challenge" events ?

I assume 100 will get you thru the prelims and the main if I'm not mistaken .

But what about 10-16-20 Challenge events or will there be such animals this year ?

Mills Morrison 03-08-2021 02:49 PM

Bring a lot more than you think you need, is the best advice.

In normal years, RST is there and you can load up with them, but their attendance looks iffy at best this year.

The challenge events typically are 30 to qualify and another 30 if you make the team excepting the Parker/LC Smith challenge which is 50 to qualify and 30 for the event. It may take more if you are involved in a shoot off. Then there is the practice 5 stand, sporting clays course with a variety of events/gauges, and who knows what I am forgetting. Mills is right, bring more than you think you will need. There's a a lot of opportunity as it is a target rich environment. Our Editor probably shoots some 3 flats or more at the Southern. :corn:

I'd already calculated what I'd need for the course and Drakes . But I wanted an idea for the Challenge stuff and if there were just the open event or some smaller gauge Challenge events on wednesday or thursday . I think in the past you guys have done Parker vs Smith with 10 , 16 , 20 and I think 410 . Was just trying to get an idea for that .

I'd already calculated for the course events and a round at Drakes as well as 100 for the Challenge itself and was up to 1000 total . Maybe a sixty extra for the 10 , 16 and 20 will be sufficient .

Mike Koneski 03-08-2021 04:30 PM

3 flats?? Geez Randy, it’s not uncommon for the editor to shoot 1000+ rounds easily!! 😂

Brett Hoop 03-08-2021 06:32 PM

:bowdown:Hmmm........Me think you ran the 16Ga and what else?

Mike Koneski 03-08-2021 07:01 PM

Down 1 on the 20g and down 1 on the 10g. I’ll have plenty of ammo and doubles for shotgun fun!! Cocked, locked and ready to rock, Doc!!

Back in the day (like 30+ years ago) 400-600 shells at trap and or skeet over a Friday to Sunday event was the norm , but I never got close to a thousand over four days

A three day state championship trap shoot was/is a 700 target program, add a few practice rounds and shoot offs and it's 800+. Maine has held some 4 day 1000 target state shoots in the past. Maine and NH State championships were for a time on back to back 3 day weekends which made for a lot of shooting.

Mike Koneski 03-16-2021 03:48 PM

Pete, that much shooting makes the trip worthwhile!!

Carvel Whaley 03-16-2021 08:36 PM

At the last Southern I shot upwards of 1500 shells, the five stand can burn up some shells. Hope it happens and the weather is good.
Carvel

Mills Morrison 03-21-2021 04:20 PM

Everything seems all ahead full at this point. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

VA state skeet shoot back then was 600 over 4 days . Prelim on Thursday , 410 and 28 Friday , 20 and doubles Saturday then the 12 gauge event on Sunday . I think they’ve turned the gauges around now so folks can get oughtta there quicker on Sunday since way fewer 100’s with the 410 . I never did the VA State Trap except the 50 bird SxS thing a couple times . But any trap shoots I did were generally just 200-16 , 100 handicap and 50 pair of doubles . Trap never turned my crank as skeet did .

I’m thinking four guns on the course Friday and the same Saturday . Throw in the 12 , 16 and 20 challenge stuff and perhaps some sort of 8 gauge deals put together . And 100 at Drakes on Wednesday that’s loosely 700 . And maybe throw in a 410 hammerless for good measure brings it up to 750 . That’ll quench my thirst an tire me the heck out !!!!!

William Davis 03-22-2021 05:40 AM

Issue with how many shells is which gauge gun will you shoot most. I don’t know until I start shooting. 12 & 20 fairly easy to estimate, could make a long run with 16 or 10 if they feel right. All 4 can enter Hammer or Hammerless. Typically carry 1200 + and a mild consumer of shells. No 410 or 28 & don’t shoot the challenge 5 stand field. Challenge course alone can use up large quantity of shells. Most shoot multiple practice rounds before the challenge itself.

Off site Rose Hill on the drive down has two courses full and a nice short sub gauge. Drakes has two courses and can stop at Kidds place or Hunters Pointe way home.

Have often relied on RST trailer to fill in, not a sure source this year. Bring all you can carry best plan.

William

Mills Morrison 03-28-2021 01:22 PM

Hope everyone has their hotel reservations lined up and is counting down the days! Also, probably a good idea to stock up on ammo as I am not sure about RST coming.

Mills Morrison 03-30-2021 03:04 PM

RST is officially NOT coming to the 2021 Spring Southern.

Mills Morrison 03-30-2021 03:10 PM

. . . But they do expect to come to Hausman's. They are really bummed about not seeing everyone at the Southern.

Brian Dudley 03-30-2021 03:44 PM

Come prepared with Shells.

Yep. I am going to talk to Deep River about what kind of supply of shells they may have and will report back. If you are coming and are planning to shoot, you should probably bring a supply.

Rick Roemer 03-30-2021 07:52 PM

I ordered from RST in anticipation of them not coming. Order was delivered in about 7-10 days. Sorry they won’t be there.
