I will use my Parker 8 gauge. My W C Scott and Son says not for Ball. I think with the right mold I could make it work. The Parker has heavier barrels so that would be the gun I would use. Only 5 more days and I will try to shoot a few Coyotes. Watched a coyote pacing back and forth around a antelope fawn and mother last week when we went out to train. Ran him off, but wish I would have had my 218 Bee with me. Fawn was getting pretty big from when we had seen it a month ago. Hope he makes it.
Charlie if you can email me the information on the mold maker that would be wonderful.

I have a W&C Scott 10 gauge and mine has the same thing stamped on the underside of the barrels . And if I live long enough eventually I'll try roundballs in them atleast long enough to kill one deer !

Rick Losey 06-28-2013 07:28 AM

the "not for ball" proof designates a choke or reduction in the bore size.

personally, i follow the advice.

i would think that at minimum you should make sure the ball is a hair smaller the the smallest diameter in that bore. there should be marks for chamber and bore size. tight 10's often have a reduction to 12 bore in the tubes.

heh phil im still looking for the mans address that makes the mold its somewhere in my collection of things...dont give up hope... i hope some one pitches infor some one here gave me his address fore sure...i sure wish i could be more organized... charlie

No problem Charlie, I just got three boxes of shells loaded by Tom Armbrust. Some #2 and some #4. Should keep me in the Predator shooting business for awhile. I am going to start assembling some sort of loading equipment for the 8 gauge. I need to see if I can modify some 10 gauge magnum equipment.

charlie cleveland 06-30-2013 10:27 AM

the old 10 ga lee hand loader is what i use and then i have a roll crimp for thecrimping but do wish i had a 6 way or 8 crimp also...you can pobably get the mans name from tom who makes the hull resizer...there is a 1 stage that does it is one operation and theres some folks who make it ina 2 stage operation...or you can get a pair of pipe crimping pliars and with 1 minute s use of a die grinder you canhave a hull resizer but my way takes about 30 secounds to resize a hull and it dont look as pretty as toms but it works fine for me...just reminded me i was supose to have sent wayne a picture of it ... hope you good luck with the predertor control with the 8 ga...these are stories we are waiting to hear... p s what kinda loads did you have tom load up 2 -3 ounce etc.... charlie

Phillip Carr 06-30-2013 01:59 PM

I had some 2 1/2 and some 2 1/4 OZ loads done. Tomorrow morning is the day. Will be getting up around 4AM and start at day light. My 9:00 AM it is getting about 95 degrees and nothings moving. Not even a hungry coyote.

charlie cleveland 06-30-2013 03:40 PM

make sure not to forget gun or ammo and wind and set the old alarm clock maybe even put it under a dishpan...good hunting we ll be waiting for the storey... charlie

Phillip Carr 06-30-2013 04:15 PM

Here is a picture from a few years ago. If you get them up close you can make quick work of them. Sorry about the upside down barrels.

Phil I hope you are keeping cool out there in tuscon with this record breaking heat. I try not even to go outside unless I have to.

Phillip Carr 07-01-2013 08:57 PM

Well we got out today and made 6 stands. Only called in one coyote. He made a dash between my hunting partner and myself. Two loads from the 8 gauges ended his run. Lost my favorite hand call before I made my 1st stand. Luckily I had a call I had bought but never had used in the truck. So we salvaged the day. Knocked off at 10:00 AM as it hit 95 degrees and we could not stand the heat.

looks like a good hunt to me..you can take a coyote with about any kinda a gun but when you do it with a 8 gauge that puts you in another class..ha was your buddy shooting a 8 ga also...what load did you use and how far was the shot taken...yall have made my day today... charlie

Phillip Carr 07-02-2013 11:48 AM

Charlie,
We were both shooting my 8 gauges. I was shooting my Parker and he ( Dave) was shooting my W C Scott and Son. We were shooting 1 7/8 of #2's. Coyote was about 30 yards running full bore straight away from Dave and quartering from me. We both shot about a split second apart and he dropped. I can hardly wait until until October this is usually the best month to call. Our best days are 5 and 13 in a day. I like to use the Burnham Brother J1 call (Distressed Javalina ). Since I lost this one yesterday, I ended up using their Black Magic call. ( Distressed Rabbit). Most Coyotes I call come in within the first 5 to 10 minutes. I start out my calling sequence with 4 light calls and then wait at least 2 to 3 minutes before calling louder and longer. This coyote came in in less than 1 minute. Coyote hunting is like calling turkeys only a lot faster action. It's amazing how fast they come in sometimes and how they just appear from no where. Our best day in the last 30 years was 13 coyotes actually shot. On that day my brother George and I were shooting rifles and had 7 coyotes come in on one stand, and were able to shoot 3 of these. Also shot a number of doubles were we both shot 1 each. Calling coyotes is really exciting with an occasional Bobcat, Badger, fox, or even a Mountain Lion coming to the call. We have also called in lots of Deer and Javalina.

charlie cleveland 07-02-2013 03:12 PM

thats a pretty good record there you got over the years..i ve never have just tried calling coyotes but i have killed some turkey hunting when i was calling a turkey...i shot a young coyote last year a calling a crow i was useing the old parker 8 ga then..may have to get me a distress call and see what i can call up... does youre parker have choke in it...and what about the wc scott... charlie

Phillip Carr 07-02-2013 06:27 PM

Charlie,

I had not measured the chokes until today when you asked. The Parker is Choked .042 in each barrel. The Scott is choked .032 in the left and .014 in the right. The Scott has the best pattern I have ever seen in a gun. I will pattern the Parker real soon now I received my shells from Tom Armbrust.

charlie cleveland 07-02-2013 07:17 PM

phil youve truly got a good amount of choke in that parker..i have noticed over thew past few years that most 8 ga s do not have much choke in them espically those made in europe.the guns made in the u. s. a. have a lot more choke such as your parker. i seem to recall a coupla other fellows with 8 ga also had full choke barrels both parkers... hope your parkewr really patterns well..my old 8 gas at least two of them are cly bore both guns have had there barrels cut would have been interesting to know what kinda choke they once had.. man that old 8 ga of yours should really pattern well it should make heck of a turkey gun... charlie

wayne goerres 07-02-2013 09:56 PM

Phil Witch ways more. The 8ga or the coyote. The way your are hoisting that critter Iam guessing it is a toss up.

Phillip Carr 07-02-2013 11:28 PM

I think the Yote has about 10 LBS. on the Parker. We get some good sized dogs, but they are usually the largest around December.

wayne goerres 07-07-2013 09:10 PM

Boys the press arrived friday and my daughter delivered it today. I dont have any hulls for my 8ga yet but a 10ga hull drops right through the center of the shell holder and is to small for the crimp stations. The guy said he was useing a tape measurer. I think I got luckey. She is an 8ga press.

Eldon Goddard 07-07-2013 09:46 PM

I am glad to hear it was the real deal.

Phillip Carr 07-07-2013 11:14 PM

EXCELLENT. If you would like send me your address by PM and I will send you out a hull tomorrow.

charlie cleveland 07-08-2013 08:43 PM

wayne i m glad you got the reloadere and especially glad its a 8 ga...charlie

Paul Plager 07-08-2013 10:15 PM

Nice looking dog Phil. Good shooting also. That 8 has to be a hoot to shoot. I do love my 10s, but have never shot an 8. It sure is a sweet looking gun. Thanks for taking us along on your hunt.:corn:
my Dr. said that i can't shoot anything until at least next month.:banghead: I had rotator cuff surgery 3 months ago. My triger finger sure is getting itchy. :draw:Your posts do help some, they also make me want to get back out there with a gun in my hand. Keep up the preadator control. I seem to remember there are a few more put there in your desert. I lived in Phoenix in the 80s and the hunting out near Goodyear was great. Now there is a prison there.

Phillip Carr 07-09-2013 09:56 AM

Paul if you are ever out this way let me know and you are welcome to shoot my 8 gauges.
