Excellent example of never say never. If it wasn't in the letter no one would have ever believed it was factory gold plating.

Could it be that the gold-plating was merely to prevent tarnish where moisture might lodge and be difficult to wipe down? Gold-plating used to be done on high-end yachts, purportedly to prevent tarnish in the marine environment, and not as one might expect, for ostentation.
