If you know the UP and get off the two tracks and beat the brush, there are still plenty of birds. Woodcock seem to be down in the last few years, but I think that is wide spread in the upper Midwest. Have checked on West Nile in grouse up here, but there have been no reports.

Ditto on WN in VT as well. I spoke to a biologist for the VT F&G Dept.
