Seeing this thread made me dig out my 8 gauge base sizer that I made years ago to iron down the reinforced head of industrial cases. It is made from mild steel about 1" thick and 2 1/2" in diameter. I turned the OD steps so it would sit in the bottom frame of my arbor press and stay in place. The hole is tapered and the edge was rounded so I could, after putting case sizing lube on it, press a case in the #1 side and then turn the die over and press the case in the second side to finish it. I use a 2 ton arbor press to push the case in and a dowel to press it out.

I bought the book in 2007 from a book seller that had it listed in the "Double Gun Journal". Don't remember who that was. It is was printed by "Big Bore Press" and 1 of 100 that was printed as a revised/updated version of some earlier work. I don't know if it is available but, you might try try the author John Shanafelt phone number (408) 241-8849 most evenings. Don't know if the information is current. Mr. Shanafelt states in the book he would be pleased to help. Regards, Dennis Jones |

Since I shoot so few I too load the eight bore by hand. I just glue in the overshot wad. I put load information on the wad so I know what I'm shooting. I don't think it would be difficult but certainly time consuming to make a crimp starter and crimp die for the eight bore, that is if one had a press to use them in. Regards, Dennis Jones |
