Mills, my DHE 16 was shipped to Anderson Hdw. in Atlanta, and the stock oval is enscribed Jos. Gray, Atlanta , Ga--I'm bettin it was his quail gun.
Mark, I have a VH 20 with 26" cyl/mod barrels also--6 lbs even also. |
The Brits had something with their 2 inch 12's. A 28ga load in a 12ga package it's just about as perfect as can be.
If I had to pick just one or two guns for all my upland gunning the meat gun would be right behind Gunner's Gun. I don't have any pictures of it but it's a DHE 20, straight grip with 26 inch bbls choked cyl/IC. Some day it will make the trip to Georgia. |
All three of my CSMC Fox guns were engraved by..

The 28 gauge was built in 1997 engraved by Richard Roy, The 410 is of that same time period also Engraved by the Master...The gold setter is lifelike! Roys birds look like they could fly away. My special order XE-16 was by luck engraved by Richard Roy in 2015 a last minute change by the maker ...(-: I am thankful to own this trio of modern Fox guns. If I ever get to hunt Quail on one of those fancy southern plantations, all three will get their turn! So much hunting....so little time!!!
This is a fun thread and I thank all who have posted, great off season fun. I have added some pictures you may also enjoy....SXS Ohio 1 My young wife made me a pheasant pot pie...Kansas wild roosters...(-: 2 Truth about setters! 3 Forgot what I loaded... 4 Parker Reproduction 28ga 28" Local bird clean up 5 Picture of the stock...this is a three barrel set 410,28,28 PG-DT-BTF |
Oh ya....picture 3 2018 I just finished cleaning the rooster gun and took this shot of ruby sleeping after the hunt in Kansas. Its always about the dogs! She just had her 8th birthday Feb-5th 2019 She has hunted Kansas 7 falls of her life, we missed going to Kansas 2013 due to the 3-4 year drought that killed everything that grows by then, it was bad!. But in 2014 things started to get better and by this past season all was back to normal for the most part. We did see more Quail this past season than any other to date. SXS Ohio and Ruby the spoiled rottin Gordon setter from Wisconsin! (-:

Well it's not a Parker (but a few Parkers were traded for them) But they are my favorites. The engraving is like a painting coming alive. And I loved hunting them down a Morrison Pines. 28 ga 5lbs 6 oz's I think.
|
Boy oh boy, them eyetalians sure make some nice scatter guns.:)

This is a future quail gun for me, a J. Venables & Son 16ga with 30 inch barrels choked none and none as it was produced before choke was invented. The shells pictured are 2 inch roll crimp paper with 3/4 oz of 7 1/2.
J. Venables was located in Oxford from 1846 to about 1900. |
Very nice! Michael McIntosh had a Purdey back action that looked like that gun and I always thought it was cool
|
I have a Stephan Grant back action that I have taken To Morrison Pines. I'd like to find an open choked 20. I have a Boss but it's pretty tightly choked. Quail are the only birds I hunt using a hammer gun.

Wow, VERY similar to my London Paton 16, also with open chokes, non rebounding hammers....I love shooting this gun!
|
A gorgeous gun Mark!

Thanks Dean,
I particularly enjoy shooting Jones Underlevers, IMHO they are terrifically ergonomic. Especially when walking and reloading. Ths gun also has 30” tubes, and weighs a touch over 6lbs. |

This 1913 vintage Ansley H. Fox A-Grade is my usual pick when Quail are the intended game --
Attachment 70129 but this 1938 vintage A-Grade could also be called upon -- Attachment 70130 Both of my Parker Bros. 20-gauges are way too tightly choked. The 2-frame is too heavy as well. Haven't yet gotten the chokes hogged out on the 0-frame. |
I used my new 28 gauge that is supposed to be mod and full this weekend and it did surprisingly well. The misses were all my fault and not the gun.
You just never know how a particular gun will perform. My experience, at least |
I used my Fox A 16 28" IC/M to take a quail Sunday at a preserve hunt over Kenny Graft's
Gordon, Ruby. |

One of my favorite guail and grouse guns is a 20 bore GH, shipped in 1903 to South Carolina. With cylinder (a few points of constriction) and modified 26" barrels, it was obviously purchased for quail hunting.
|
Tom, my GH began as a 20 and was shipped to Virginia in 1903 as well. I bet it was a quail gun too

Pictures of Harold going in...Ruby on point

John, What are “mud quail”, I’ve never seen one of those boogers? Maybe snipe or rail?
|
Probably woodcock which is a new favorite sport of mine
|
Those are snipe. Perhaps the most fun of all game birds. Don't knock it till to try it.
|
Snipe was my favorite game bird for years until they became non existent around here.
|
No knock on my part, I just wasn’t sure.
