Charlie, both of those dove guns of yours would be fine in the grouse woods. Would love to see pics of your D grade 20 Damascus--those chokes are perfect for the grouse woods.

Sadly, I couldn't hit a buffalo in the arrss at 20 paces with a sub-six pound double.....BUT if push came to shove and I found myself lathered in perspiration, swattin' skeeters in the Sept. grouse woods, either one of these would rate a most worthy companion.

Let's hope this is a good grouse season. Picture of a high point 2 years ago , 4 birds over 2 days with a Parker 12ga DH , 26" Damascus using RST paper shells.

I have never been a big fan of 12 gauge guns for upland bird hunting BUT this gun spoke to me in many ways. It's a best gun from James Purdey, a self opener with 27 inch barrels choked .004 & .008. It's what they call a Light Game Gun and weighs just 6 lbs. With 3/4 and 7/8 oz loads it will make a nice upland gun.
The wood isn't much to look at but the English aren't noted for their wood anyway. Manufacture date is 1922. The barrels are off having new ivory beads installed as it came with red Bradley type beads the horror of it:eek: It will see the Grouse coverts then the Quail fields of south Georgia. |
nice gun you should never tire of toteing this 6 lb gun....bet its murder on quail....charlie

Nice! I haven't yet had the chance to handle a British "best" gun.

wood figure
From the third photo it looks like a lot of nice figure in the stock.
|
It sure does. I've had a few Parkers with a dark and aged finish like that where the grain and figure could hardly be seen. I had the wood only refinished and the figure pops now.
But, the British, being British, don't really care to overstate anything and they prefer dark, understated wood - even on their finest guns. . |
