I found that out in my younger days when I hunted deer with hounds, on drives. I wanted the tightest patterns possible with the largest buckshot possible. I learned that 00 was the largest size I could use through a Full choke without getting flyers. Federal Premium 00 was copper plated and patterned the best of all.

Let’s remember, Askins was writing about paper shells with fiber wads and bare shot. A far cry from modern shells with the shot cushioned on setback and protected from scrubbing during the bore run, both by polymer shotcups.

He also hated the "slow" and "light" shells we routinely shoot. You know, 12g, 7/8 oz at 1170.

I like what my doubles like, i.e. what they regulate with. Not all vintage doubles regulate with light, fast loads. I have found that some need slow, heavy for gauge loads to print both barrels to the same POI.

I'm convinced that, sadly, many vintage double owners never pattern their guns for POI, and wonder why they can't hit well with them.
