We had a Remington single shot .22 smoothbore for a barn gun when I was a kid in south central Illinois. Shot bird shot (snake shot) and it was deadly, still have .22 bird shot in my truck.

Around 1978, my dad was holding a NAVHDA field trial and forgot to bring a gun, so he ran into KP Firearms (Who remembers Jerry Kaiser?) and told him he needed something cheap that went bang. Jerry soldd him a Nitro Special .410 for $50. He grew to like it, and bought a better one. That fifty dollar gun sold at Baltimore a few years ago for $1600.

Several years ago I walked into "Bob's Gun Shop" in Alpena, MI. Let's just say it's not your typical small town gun shop. Looking at the rack behind the counter sat a straight stocked, VHE in 410 with looong barrels. I ask the young fellow behind the counter if I could see the gun and he said, "sure" and as he handed me the gun he said "that's a pretty expensive shotgun" so, acting dumb (not hard for me to sound convincing), I said, "really?" The young man said, "yep, that one's $1,500." I ask if he would take a check and he got a little nervous and said, that he would have to call Bob and make sure. I suggested he check the tag and his face get's red. $15,000. Oops. I'm not sure I could have held a pen steady enough to write a check it he would have said, "sure."
