Well Rick—I’d say that shotgun is something very special now! It will always be remembered as the “doubled on grouse Parker”! Congratulations!

"In any grouse hunter’s log, a double is a great event. This, of course, occurs when a brace of birds boils out simultaneously and you anchor both with as many shots. It is a neat trick because it requires skillful gun handling, because modern shooters rarely get an opportunity to attempt the coup, and because cover is usually thick enough to shield at least one of the pair...

…A double is just about the greatest thing that can happen to any dedicated grouse hunter.”

I think we could have a great "Debate" among our membership over Ruffed Grouse vs. Mearns Quail and which one is the "Holy Grail". To me it's easy as Ruffed Grouse would be a distant second.
Still a double on either is a rare accomplishment.

If I recall correctly, my first double on grouse was with a Model 97 Winchester. My first, and only double on Mearns quail was with a M-21 Winchester.
Unfortunately I had not taken a Parker on either of those hunts.
BTW, if you have a weak heart, a Mearns flush could be dangerous.

Does the term "double" mean that two birds are killed with one shot ? Thanks

Two birds flushed at once and each taken with one shot each.

Double means two birds, two shots (and recovered) from one rise.
Two birds with one shot is called a "Dutch Double".

Another double is two posters posting the same answer to the same question almost simultaneously ;-)

new one for me -
always heard that called a "willie" locally
or "Scotch double" (i assume being thrifty saving a shell)- not to be confused with two shots of single malt which doesn't save anything

Got what I call a cheap double last week on grouse with a 20ga Trojan ,a bird flushes with a right barrel kill then a second later another bird flushes and a left barrel kill. Got a true grouse double long time ago with a 16ga Merkel which I still have. It's very hard to even get a chance at a true grouse double these days.
