Trusty old Stevens 5100 in 16ga. The first double gun I ever owned, and probably as good a gun as I need, really...

Have a 870 lw. 20 that the magazine tube rusted on a hint of humidity, de- oiled it and did 2 coats of car wax no more rust so did that to all of them. When in rain I make sure to dry them off before they go in the truck then at camp they are dried and heated gently. Never had any problems. These guns we like are some really well made things and we worry about them accordingly.

I used to carry a rainy day gun with me on all of my hunting trips. Then one day it hit me; "Why am I doing this?" Now I just take two guns with me just in case one of them has a mechanical problem.

These thing are just metal & wood, if you take care of them & wipe them down correctly after they've been in bad weather you're good to go.

Now if we start talking high condition collectable guns that's a different conversation. They wouldn't be on a hunt with me.

About 7 years ago I came upon my rain gun a 20ga VH that was left in a case wet. The outside and the bore show signs of the resulting rust , guns weight is 6lb 3oz with 28" barrels. It also has great dimensions of 14 1/4 - 1 1/2 - 2 1/2. With a DHBP.

I have two actually, a DHE 20 with a straight grip and 26 inch barrels C/IC the other is a 28 inch straight grip Fox Sterlingworth choked .003 and .006 in 16ga
The first hunt I went on with a new to me Holland & Holland 20 it rained all day but only after I was a long way from the truck. It got wiped down and blow dried and was no worse for the experience.

I hunt with 90% of my guns and they all have been very wet to soaked at times, properly cleaned and put away, I can't detect any lasting damage. Here in the Finger Lakes it seems to rain or snow every day during the hunting seasons!! I do always have a couple runners cooling towels in my pocket and wipe the rain and or water off (from my Lab) my duck guns. These runner cooling towels are sponge like and will absorb water when wet. They are a great product and keep the water on your gun to a minimum. That being said the few high condition guns I have never get hunted. Way more guns get ruined from falls, poor storage and poor gunsmithing in my opinion.

Craig, never heard about "runner's towels" thanks for the tip.

Craig Larter 03-18-2020 03:58 PM

Eric runner's soak them and place them on their neck to cool themselves in hot weather. They work great to dry off a gun in wet conditions. Only problem is they don't sell them in camo color, mine are wild plum!

look for mirco-fiber towel - swimmer's towel - runners towel

very absorbent but wring out almost everything they absorb
