After dealing with the effects of 10 inches of rain this past weekend I caution those considering "riding it out" to think rationally. We did not have the high winds to deal with nor as much rain as is forecast for you. Once it starts, you won't be able to leave and emergency people won't be able to get to you. Our prayers are with you.

Edit: Stand corrected I did see some media reports talking about flooding, but wrongly compared it to Katrina. Katrina is bad but this could be much worse. Harvey was bad, but Texas is flat. Get half as much rain as they did in Harvey and put it on grade and condense it in narrow valleys. This one will really test the Great Experiment of the TVA and their dams.

I hate to say this and I have not heard anyone talking about this but it is important to consider. All the focus is on the coast as it will take the initial brunt of storm. However looking at the models if this storm parks and dumps rains in the mountain areas the flash flooding will be devastating. Those tall mountains all that water deluging into narrow valleys. Remember what happened to the Greenbrier in the middle of West Virginia.

Just because your inland on high ground for this one could be a false sense of security. Be vigilant and proactive. Family still has family land in hills of Eastern Kentucky those little valley towns in forgotten areas just get decimated. Hills of North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky and maybe even North Georgia think proactive as well. You get power outages and infrastructure damage in those areas, it will be rough.

We had a tornado go over our house when I was 5 and I was on the back porch for most of it. I have not been worried about storms since then. It looks like they are predicting rain and stormy weather here, but nothing serious.

The MSM weather folks like to exaggerate things. There is a retired scientist who has a Facebook page called Enki Research and that is the best place to get weather news down here. Not kidding

Take it from someone that has dealt with Hurricanes personally and professionally for the far greater part of my life. As long as you can stay on high enough ground, the wind just breaks things......but, if this storm is as wet as they say it is, please make sure of your ability to get to and shelter on high ground.

Thanks Mark! We are pretty high where we are, although the flood tides did get close to us in Hurricane Irma last year.

I hate to say it since there is no real good scenario for a strong Hurricane landfall anywhere. No matter where hits first if it moves inland and stalls not good and some places worse than others. Cousins just boarded up and bolted out of Charleston to get to Athens.

These things are so unpredictable still a strong big storm but forecasts are showing a Cat 3 now at landfall but who knows.

It does appear Savannah could be on good side of storm. Bruce needs to work his magic and send a Dakota Clipper cold front down here to push this thing out to sea.

Steve, exactly where is your cottage in Morehead City? I have friends on Bogue Sound and love the area. I live in god forsaken Montgomery County Maryland, about thirty five miles directly north of the White House.

I rode out a cat 1 or 2 in Savanna back in 64 or 65. It was not a heck of a lot of fun but I did learn the joys of gin and tonics when the power went out.

Yep G&T's are important especially in tropical areas for the quinine to kill the malaria. Plus it does have a pretty good numbing effect if prescribed hourly.
