So does anyone have a great 7/8 recipe using unique powder since this is what I already use for my 28 reloads?

John you can so all of the steps on with your sizemaster except crimp start and final crimp. To do the roll crimp you will need a roll crimp head and a drill press or my favorite tool a hand crank Bridgeport Gun Implement tool that show up on e-bay from time to time.

I like 16 grains Unique chamber pressure less than 8000 psi velocity about 1150 fps. Nice soft shooting load for informal clay target shooting or quail/Ruff Grouse size birds.

These 1 oz loads off the Hodgdon site fit perfectly in a 2 1/2" Win / Ched hull ,if you try and load them in a 2 3/4 " hull the stack height is too low . I use these loads for hunting all the time in my short chambered guns , they perform well .

18-19 grains of Unique will work with the SG16s wad in a straight walled hull also .

For Win/ Ched type hulls - not CF or rem hulls

Hodgdon 700-X CCI 209 BP G/BP 13.5 8,800 PSI 1,075
Hodgdon 700-X CCI 209 BP G/BP 13.8 9,500 PSI 1,100
Hodgdon 700-X CCI 209 BP G/BP 14.2 9,800 PSI 1,125
Hodgdon 700-X Win. 209 BP G/BP 13.5 8,500 PSI 1,075
Hodgdon 700-X Win. 209 BP G/BP 14.0 9,000 PSI 1,100
Hodgdon 700-X Win. 209 BP G/BP 14.3 9,300 PSI 1,125

Here's a couple more that are tested

Fiochi 2 9/16" 1 oz Unique 19 CCI 209 BP Z-16 1146 6880

16 gauge forum

Fiochi 2 9/16" 1 oz Unique 20.5 CCI 209 BP Z-16 1220 8020

16 gauge forum

I would not be afraid to use these in any straight walled hull they fit in.

I would also look into some 7/8 oz loads for the 16. That's my max load for preserve pheasant, and it works well on most shots. It's also a bit easier on older doubles as well.

Steve is the 16 grains of Unique for the 2 1/2" RST hull with 7/8 oz load or is it for the 1oz load? Thanks

This is for a 7/8th ounce load John asked for. I use Winchester 209 primer and Gualandi 1621 wads (I thing Ballistics Products calls them their SG16L). Any of the Gualandi 16 gauge wads will give the same results but may require a filler for a good crimp.

Based on 16g fourm data I loaded some 7/8 oz with 19 grains of Unique. I always shoot a new load with questionable data in a pump first. Seemed to me too much recoil for my SxS guns. Did not like it in the Remington 31 either.

My opinion, 16 G target loads, 3/4 oz with Green Dot 14 grs is too light 14.5 is about right, I don't need 15 grs for clay targets. 7/8 oz Hunting load 14.5 to about 15 grs Green Dot.

All in Cheddite hulls Winchester primers, DR 16 wads fold crimp. 3/4 needs a filler 7/8 crimps well without fillers.

Personally, I use 14.8 grs. of International Clays, 7/8 oz of No. 6, a Downrange wad, and Win 209 primer in the reviled RP "black" hull. It has worked well for me in all 16-bore doubles for years.
