I also have a VH 20 gage that came to me with GH checkering. The forend iron has typical VH engraving and is numbered to the gun so I just assumed the forend wood was broken and replaced sometime in the past.

Just pull the forend iron and look for the serial no. stamped into the wood under the iron at the knuckle.

Jim I should probably take a look but I was never really that concerned with how or why it got this way. I bought the gun for a very reasonable price and I can guarantee you this fall when my grandson learns to shoot two triggers he will not care at all about the forend checkering.
