Here is a 12 ga I have is the engraving this era? http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps62d9803d.jpg Mine is a 32inch bbl English stock. it could use a 16 ga little brother. |
The 16 is probably a later gun, ser#4488xx (1927), and does not have cocking indicators. It has a pistol grip and splinter fore arm. Very nice gun you have, if I don't take it, I can put you in touch with seller

Cocking indicators came about around 1928 and were gone by 1932 if memory serves me correctly. Serial no. 400,000 and above are NID guns and engraving would be very similar like the one pictured.

Cocking indicators came in with the NID Model in 1926. They were eliminated from the Ithaca literature in 1935. I have a .410-bore NID in the low 459xxx range and it has cocking indicators --

Dave, beautiful!! Well, the 4E 16 is now mine, but the owner is out of town this weekend. I promise plenty of pics.

In addition to what I stated above, I've seen a number of higher grade NIDs without the indicators in lower serial number ranges, which were likely special ordered without. In his original review of the NID, Capt. Chas. Askins said "it smacked of the Heinie gun" which probably didn't endear it to veterans of The Great War!! However, there were indicators on the good Captains Magnum-Ten No. 4E+. I've never seen a good enough picture of his fully loaded No. 5E 16-gauge to tell if it has indicators or not.
