December Black, craw full of acorns.

John Dallas 12-13-2009 07:16 PM

I shot a Woodie a while back that had 17 acorns from the back of his throat to his gullet. Can anyone hazzard a guess on how much food is that ? - a day, a week, 6 hours?

That sounds like it would get a small deer threw the morning.

It would last him the day in the winter, maybe less. He would have been foraging again before his crop was empty. In the coastal Northeast those blacks will feed on baby mussels and tiny snails too when the tide permits it.

This month I'm trying one with no dead birds... shown below are a 1907 DHE 1-1/2 Frame 12 ga and a circa 1987 DHE 1-1/2 frame 12 ga Parker Reproduction. The calls are of roughly the same relative vintages. One is a "Fuller's Goose Call" made in about 1907 by David Fuller oddly enough. The other is unmarked, I bought it from Dunn's in about 1987 it is louder than a semi truck horn.
