It is still rather amazing that a quick search for popular target powders such as 700x, Red Dot, etc still comes up empty for all the big powder/reloading internet retailers. Can't remember the last time I saw a brick of 22LR on a store shelf either. Who ever thought this would happen in this country and for so long.
The last show here in Denver had whatever one wanted for rifle and pistol ammo, .22LR, and powder. It was just all spendy. Powders were mostly $30-$35 per pound. A lot of my powder supply has old price stickers of as low as $1... or maybe $2... I was just at a Michigan gun show and found quite a lot of vintage paper shotshell ammo but prices were higher than what one can get Rio shells for at S Warehouse. I found two ammo cans at one table, one full of vintage paper 20's, one of 16's, and all usable shot sizes, but he wanted what amounted to $15/box so I passed. I'd have gone half that and let him keep the ammo cans, but no more. The Michigan show wasn't anywhere near as well stocked on powder as the Denver show.

The reason? Well, that's getting into political issues... |
Well, the Alcohol and the Tobacco have nothing to do with it and Firearms are protected under the 2nd so it must be the "E" issue that's causing it all.
I was under the understanding that IMR was to discontinue 7625. None around for months then my friends found some newly stocked on the shelf at Welch's in Lebanon NH and picked me up a few pounds. Wonder what is up - still making it, been in the warehouse?
Was the newly acquired 7625 sold under the Hodgon brand?
It was labeled IMR with no mention of Hodgden.
There could be light at the end of the tunnel. Last night I went to the Kittery Trading Post and they had CCI 22LR and 22 WMR and a lot of it. Prices were not what they used to be, 300 rounds of either 36gr HV HP or 40 gr round nose SV was $29.99. 22 WMR was $49.99 for 200 rounds. No limit per customer. Again this is the first time since a promotional sale last where 22 ammo sold out in minutes that I have seen American made 22 ammo on their shelves without a feeding frenzy.

Shotgun world in Anniston Alabama has 700x on the shelf. Did'nt think to look at the price.
The S Warehouse here in Denver has all sorts of powder on the shelves, even some 1# cans of PB which is supposed to be discontinued. Still kicking myself for not snagging the three 8# or maybe 12# tins of PB from the Tanner show here last year. Just don't have a way to get it home. Best deal I've seen for at least AR ammos is Wideners. Israeli IMI cans of 1200 rds of 55 or 62 gr FMJ for way cheaper than anyone I've seen in a long time. Same with 55/62 gr FMJ bullets for reloading. I think it was 9.4/12.3 cents each. If I were driving home tomorrow instead of flying I'd be taking some cans of ammo along.
Now that the powder is about 30.00 a pound what would you bet that when the powder shortage ends the price stays in the 30.00 a pound range.
Yep. It all makes you wonder who all is involved in the conspiracy. Assuming there is one, of course
I don't think I have paid 30 a pound even the last couple years
Even though it took searching and some patience, I eventually found what I needed |
Like Rick, I have been able to find what I need without paying out the nose for it. I did find some PB and 7625 pounders and bought them at around $25/lb but they have always been a little more expensive. I was buying 20/28 at around $19/lb and REd and Green dot around $20. I bought 2 lbs of Longshot at $22.50 but think I'll try to get rid of it as it really does not fit with what I want to load.
It may depend on the area you are in but in this area in Goerga powder runs 30.00 to 36.00 a pound. At any rate since we have had a democratic president in office (2008) the price of powder has at least doubled.
We order thru the club from a distributor - no sales tax and no shipping. Most powders are under $112 for 8#s. Promo is 88/8 and Clay Dot is 92/8. I'd never pay 30/lb. You guys are gonna have to start buying 8 lbs at a time and find a way to get it cheaper.
I found some IMR 4831 in an eight pound Jug the other day and it was $250.00. That was in Alabama. Powder at the New Cabala's in Atlanta was 30.00 and up. If you guy's can buy 8 lbs at $112.00 you are lucky.
powder in my area is about what wayne said..last reddot and blue dot i paid 28 dollars for 1 pound cans..i looked at a 4 lb jug 2 weeks ago it was winshester lite it was 154 dollars for the 4 lb jug...i paid 53.50 for the last bag of shot i bought in lead....charlie

If it provides any schadenfreude for those on this thread, I saw an 8-lb jug of Red Dot at the Louisville show yesterday. For the low, low price of $259 ! For some reason, no one seemed to be grabbing for it...
I bought green dot and unique last week for $119.00 for 8 lbs. Carvel
Found 4 1 pounders of 7625 this weekend at a gun show, in Washington, Pa. He was asking $24/pound. I offered $85 for all four and he took it. Also bought 2 pounds of International at $19/pound.
Not many Parkers to look at, a VHE 12 with a replacement straight grip, 1 1/2 frame, and another Vhe 12, and a Parker Repro 20 2 barrel set. |
I wonder what is up with 7625? Word out there was it was discontinued ibut after a long drought it shows up again. I found four pounds about a month ago. Let's hope it doesn't go away as it is fine stuff for low pressure loads.
For a source for lead shot try rotometals.com they have new and reclaimed shot available. I have been using the reclaimed that is washed and graphite. Their prices include shipping. Two bags, 50lbs., washed and graphite is $83.99. Hope this helps. For the powder shortage, just keep checking all the websites.

does any one know if kens reloading supplies is still around , he sells at discount around the mich. ohio area . I have tried calling many times and left messages with no reply
scored 8 lbs of WSF , 12lbs longshot , things are looking up
At gunshow last week, one dealer had at least a dozen 1 lbers of Red Dot, a bunch of Titewad, and several pounds of Unique. I didn't need any Red Dot 'cause I had bought a 4 pounder of WAA Light this fall, and still had some RD. I did buy a pound of Unique to try with 16 ga loads.
I got 8lbs of 7625 at end of last summer haven't seen any since, also got 12 lbs of unique 3 weeks ago
At the shot show last week and met with Hodgdon. They have discontinued 7625 and PB. What is around is leftovers and no more will be produced.
the powder supply has not picked up in north miss yet....charlie
good news we have got powder shipments in two months in a row , hodgdon powder is now available ,clays universal , international , and the Winchester powders hodgdon makes , things are looking up , but for you cheap guys the price is up to. cant have everything.
Paul Ken Meyers is still in business that I know of. Our club gets their targets from him. I saw International Clays in both 4 and 8lbs today as well as 20/28. I'm in good shape with 7625,clays and 20/28 at least for now.
Has the powder availability situation changed in your area? I am not able to walk into any place I know of and immediately buy popular shotgun powders. I was able to buy an 8lb jug of Red Dot this week from a gun club member who dabbles in selling reloading supplies. I am good for some time to come with this acquisition. The seller told me the distributor where he buys his stuff has increased prices on powder. 700-X saw the biggest increase, his price on 8lb was $160. He said suggested retail on it is now over $200. The Red Dot was $135. I expected the prolonged powder shortage would eventually bring higher prices.
Seems as if it has lightened up a bit Pete. I just picked up an 8lb keg of 20/28 for $124 at one of the distributors in PA. They had a good selection on hand.
Things seem better but not back to normal in my NE Ohio area. Some 8 pounders of Red Dot, etc. on the shelf of a local retailer... and about $135 for same. Primers are lean.
My local distributor has some primers, but NO Federals. Their prices for powder are still about $115 for an 8 lb jug. That's IF they have what you want. Plenty of shot. And plenty of CCI or import primers available there. Bottom line: If you see what you want, BUY IT. Before the next executive order... |
no powder
Pete, I can't say that the powder situation has improved in the southeast. I have had Clays Universal ordered for 2 1/2 years and it still isn't available. Maybe when Rio starts getting in the game Hogdon will wake up and start paying some attention to their customers. Jim Garrett

green dot
does anyone have a good 1200 fps load for 1 oz shot for a 16 gauge? Jim Garrett

For the especially Powder-poor shooters out there, Ballistic Products has Nobel Vectan powder in stock for order. Reasonable price, too:

Seems to be much better here in Southern New England.
cabelas here in wheeling,wv has plenty of universal and international clays--all 1 pound bottles, also Longshot.
Bought a couple pounds of green dot, and reddot last weekend at a gun show, and they had I bottle of 20/28 so I bought it also |
In case some of you haven't seen it, GunsAmerica posted this today regarding Hodgdon powders:
"Unless you’re brand-new to reloading, you’re aware of how difficult it has been to find components over the last few years. Well I’ve got great news for shotgun and handgun reloaders. Hodgdon is reintroducing the Clay’s line of powder. They don’t have a new powder but what they have is even better. I’m told that the volumes they have committed to buy has allowed them to virtually guarantee availability in 2016. "As if that was not enough, they will be reducing the price on all three of the Clays powders. So whether your choice is Clays, Clays International or Clays Universal, availability and price should no longer prevent you from making Clays your first choice." So... things might be looking up for 2016. At least as far as shotgun powder is concerned. Here's the link: https://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/hod...-new-imr-4955/ |
