Got my letter for PH 176149 12 Gauge today and it sure doesn't seem to match up with the gun. Letter says it was ordered by E. K. Tryon on November 13, 1916 and featured 32" barrels. Current gun has barrels at 26 1/4" with the line at the end of the barrels and also has chokes of .035 and .020 with reversed chokes. Think its pretty safe to say that something is remiss between the letter and the actual gun. Only thing of note is order book 98 says the gun was returned in May 31, 1918 to have a new extractor installed by the D. Pike Co. Ltd of Toronto Canada. FWIW, its wasn't listed in the serial number book. Bores are .730 and minimum barrel wall thickness is .039.
Appreciate any clues on what reality might be. The barrels sure don't appear to be cut to me and if 6" were cut my thoughts are it wouldn't be choked what it is. FWIW, the barrels also touch at the ends.
Mystery continues.

No mystery. If the bores are what you say, the gun was rebarrelled and the rebarrelling is mentioned in a missing book. When you sell a gun to an informed buyer, he looks at and measures the gun and uses the books and the letters as "related information". If a 176,000 range gun is rebarrelled, it is very likely that the rebarrelling occurred after the end of the order book period. Your gun is at the very end of the order book period.

Thanks Bill. That has to be it. FWIW, the chokes are 4.5" long.

Tom,
Mystery solved! I screwed up:banghead: 26" barrels it is. Revised letter goes out tomorrow. First time I've screwed up this year:rolleyes:
If anyone gets a letter back that doesn't closely resemble the gun you have, just e-mail me and I can double check the records.

Great. I was trying to figure this one out and was scratching my head. That's pretty easy to do because I have no hair.

Got the letter. The gun is indeed original with 26" barrels. Nothing listed about the reverse chokes or anything else regarding the gun. Guessing the information was a tad sparce on PH guns as compared to higher grades. The letter on my CH was amazingly detailed.
